The £4m is certainly not disposable income but I wouldn't say they are cash poor.
They seem to live quite comfortably.

If they did sell up (as sole beneficiaries), they could live on the proceeds of the invested capital for life, and never lift a finger.
Not that I think they'd be happy. As tonight's episode showed, a family farm represents a lot of personal and familial identity.

Makes you wonder what would happen if the CAP was ever abolished; more than half these places would become completely unviable, and would become insolvent within a year.

Why has Phoebe gone to Jennifers? Did she call Jennifer gran?

Because Phoebe's biological Mum is Kate Aldridge, Jennifer and Brian's daughter. Kate was a proper one. In South Africa now I think.

Anyway, the archers farm Brookfield, that's the story.”

I thought the future of the farm was broadcast at the time Phil retired and David and Ruth took over. Of course, I can't remember what they were, save that if the farm leaves the family the spoils are divvied up.

If anyone can remember the proportions, I'd love to know. Even if the other 3 only get half between them, that cuts David and Ruth's share massively.

Maybe David and Ruth will rent a farm elsewhere, and leave the odious Pip to run Brookfield for a salary. That way, they'll still be able to get an income from it.

I hope Mike doesn't go,mi used to love him and Betty.
Drought of men? That's always been the case I think hence Brian's ability to shag about.

He's shameless about his past.

Jennifer reminding Brian of his philandering past

And best of all, Charlie playing hard to get. Really do hope he has no interest in Adam other than getting him into bed once

Love the line developing re the Archer children having stakes in Brookfield should there be a sale- there's going to be a good deal of tension when Ruth realises this.

The way Rob is beginning to control Helen is really insidious and is being unfurled very realistically.
This is often exactly how domestic violence and control starts. The way he got her thinking she's got to text him when she goes out of the house was chilling.
Alarm bells Helen - *abort now*!”

Poor Lizzie, you should not laugh!

What's more weird about Helen is that she is Pats daughter, she might as well have Germaine Greer as her mum.

Very true, it's got a substantial value but it often has a more substantial value, and of course there are rules about ownership upon sale.

Comparably yes, the archers are comfortable but they don't live like people with £4m because of course they don't have the money.

What rubbish, £4m isn't small beer for a small business. It's a good value for a family run firm. And why would they be spending it on cider and sky?
That's the sort of thing people who complain about benefit recipients write to the daily mail.

Why is pip so odious?

Anyway, I can't help but think Shula and Elizabeth will want Brookfield to stay in the archers family because of their (spoiled) children.

Kenton has never been attached to Brookfield in the way the others were so he and jolene will probably just go on holiday to Florida and visit the Grand Ole whatis where country singers go.

Yes isn't that part of the irony in this story line. Kate was unfaithful to Roy and subsequently I believe and her being unfaithful led to her and Roy splitting and Phoebe finding it difficult to have a good relationship with her Mum and trust her. I think this is why Phoebe is being so hard on Roy.

However though I know factually Jennifer and Brian are Phoebe's grandparents there's been very little demonstration of that until now. I can see why it's a surprise to some.

I can't abide her - she's so spoilt and conceited.
Recent points of note include her tantrums about the car, her indolent approach to agricultural college, tantrums about Spencer / lovelife etc, urgh.

Haven't heard her whiny voice in a while. Have they mothballed her for a bit? Wouldn't surprise me as the actress was dreadful too.

Not recently, that's for sure. But I remember when there was the whole thing about who was going to look after Phoebe, Roy & Hayley or Kate, that Jennifer always said she wanted to keep access to Phoebe - she's basically Jennifer's first grandchild, and the only other one is Kate's second kid.

Elizabeth's children are spoiled, but Dan seems to be a lovely young man.

I don't disagree with this at all. But as far as entertaining listening goes, I much prefer angry spoilt delinquent Freddie to tediously and strangely lobotomised Daniel, specially since he's gone off to train to be a professional bore.

Haha Daniel has adopted a rather sterilized personality.

My favourite bit was right in the middle of Roy breaking down Brian goes I'd better go as you're very busy What busy having an emotional melt down

Brian doesn't strike me as the type to do sympathy, empathy or caring even very well.

You're so right. His sympathy doesn't go much beyond a clap on the back and a "Come on old chap".

Surprised he didn't say "Look at me, I played away loads, and I'm in clover."

David and Ruth could try the Woody Allen/Mia Farrow Solution. When Brookside is cut in two by the road (or whatever), David could stay and farm one half and they could sell the other - allowing Ruth to buy a little farm near her mother

Mike and Betty were ok, but I always think it's odd they called their children Roy and Brenda - these names must have been really old-fashioned when they were born. I bet there aren't many people their age with those names.

Pip is a madam. Didn't she have a thing with an older guy and worry her parents to death? It would be good if she could switch her course or whatever she's doing to somewhere near Granny Heather

I love Freddie at the moment - I wish he was on more, throwing tantrums and making Elizabeth squirm

He really is, but I love him lately. He was so funny when the kitchen was being fitted. Brian seems much more down to earth and less snobbish than Jenny I think. He's happy to have a drink and a chat with anyone, and while I reckon Jennifer really wishes Alice hadn't married Chris the smith, Brian doesn't mind at all
