Bit disenfranchised with gaming at the moment

Is anyone else feeling like this?

It seems to me that we're currently on the climb-down from this current generation of consoles. I can't think of one developer who's making the real effort for an original, above-and-beyond title, just quite a few sequels. Although some of these are good (I recently bought Max Payne 3 and quite enjoyed it) it doesn't distract me from feeling that it's just more of the same until the next Xbox/PS arrives - developers know when this will be and are essentially sitting on their laurels until they know they can get going big-time on a next-gen title.

I absolutely relish gaming and don't really want to knock it in general - as I say, I've enjoyed a fair few sequels in the last couple of years. But probably the most recent game that really made me go "wow, I love it" is Red Dead Redemption.

I've just scanned Gamespot's 'Top Rated' recents tab in their Xbox section, and second place is The Walking Dead with an 8.0. Tenth place goes to Harley Quinn's Revenger with 6.5. Where are the 9.5s?

Feel free to disagree with me, I'm not looking to shoot anyone down. If anything I'd love to get some different opinions, might make me feel a bit better about the next 12 months of gaming releases! Am I forgetting a title that'll be coming about in the next year or so?

Just to add, I'm genuinely not a full-time misery-guts! I'm also heavily into my films, and there are some crackers in the pipeline that I'm really excited about. Just seems to me that the gaming industry has taken it's foot off accelerate lately.

I think there's two ways of looking at this, I'm a retro gamer at heart but even I realise that gaming has never been better than what it is today and with the kinds of software announced at this years E3 it's looking to be an even better year than last.

If a new Xbox and PlayStation were to come out now I don't see how it would change the type of software we are already seeing, sure graphics would be better but I think the tools we have now, from Kinect, Move, the new WIi U, it all enables innovation if the developers choose to use them. We are seeing that too, but people generally seem more interested in the same old shooters. Maybe you are just buying the wrong kinds of games and not aware of some of the fresh software that is around the corner?

If the underlying question is 'Are there any decent games coming out in the next 12 months?" the answer is no.

This may be it - to be honest I haven't been paying close attention to E3 this year, only skimmed a few articles due to being a bit swamped with other things.

To be fair I'd disagree with this - Assassins Creed III for example looks like it could be quite fun. I guess what I was getting as was that there's nothing on the horizon that looks especially different and unique from what we're seeing now, which is just a lot of sequels - some good, most bad.

Seriously??

I have to question what your actually playing currently??

I mean having just finished Skyrim - which frankly was awesome I have since spread my gaming net out to crazy, different games such as Catherine and Asuras Wrath and last night I started Kingdoms of Amalur and honestly could have sat playing that all night. All of this before I have even started other games from last year I still need to get round to...

Seriously dude what are you playing because it sure isn't right

Do I need next gen? Nope and not at least until next year thank you!!

EDIT: I would also add don't go on scores dude!! I enjoyed Binary Domain ... it was honestly i nicely told story and a good romp but it didn't score that well ... go with your gut who knows you might find a surprise or two out there for you

Sometimes I don't feel like picking up my joypad for a week or two. Was like this recently as I wasn't playing as much as I usually do. But the imminent arrival of Dawnguard has given my gaming gland a shot of adrenaline and I'm rapidly working through the many many many unfinished quests in Skyrim.

As to the other question of decent games, well, I suppose it's a matter of taste. For me Halo 4, Borderlands 2, Hitman Absolution and Far Cry 3 are my Q3/Q4 purchases, although I am hoping for another DLC for Skyrim around that time.

EDIT: Agree with Monkey Munch. Go with your gut. If I had listened to my (real life) friend I never would have bought Borderlands which is easily in my top 10 list and I wouldn't be craving that Ultimate CE of Borderland 2.

Games cost millions to make and few companies have that sort of money to invest, sadly those that do have become very risk averse and prefer to stick to what they know sells, mostly Call of Duty clones and yearly sports titles.

@Monkey Munch Skyrim is an excellent example of playing it safe, it's Oblivion with snow. They have improved a few things but they've not taken any chances. As for Kingdoms of Amalur, that wasn't very original either, the lore and story were OK but the game mechanics were a cross between WOW and Fable, not that they're going to get a chance to improve on that as they've bust.

I disagree, but there are very few.

I'm looking forward to Worms: Revolution & Sonic Allstars Racing Transformed. New Tomb Raider also looks good.

Slightly erroneous arguments RPG's are RPG's that spans the entire genre really, mechanics and the way you level may differ but you buy an RPG because it's an RPG. But the rich story of Kingdoms of Amalur and the huge open world that is Skyrim make them different and trust me I have played MANY a bad RPG to use as a control here. But what about Catherine, Asuras Wrath these are games that dare to be different you supporting those??

It strikes me that the guy who started this is all about reading reviews, going for big score games then because this quite blinkered view is just becoming bored of the same old same old and well who wouldn't? As these big scoring games are more often than not just these clones you talk of ....

EDIT: I would also check again about Kingdoms of Amalur 2 not being made dude ... seems that plenty of devs/ studios are lining up to offer money to that old team and IP

Ahhh thank God someone feels the same way. I used to get that "cant wait to play", then play for a few hours at a time but now I just feel bored. I go online and everyone plays the same thing. I go on to have a crack and a laugh and play a game with people. Too many of my friends are watching youtube or listening to music and watching films and its annopying when you want a game of something and they "cant be arsed".
There is nothing since Skyrim that has me wanting to play. There are not many multiplayer games that people want to play and hardly any good Co op games at the moment. Im playing Deus Ex but I just cant get excited about it.
I spend a lot of time on my own of an evening and like to have a play and nothing is doing it for me!

Your missing my point, yes they are different but neither of them are very original. Skyrim is prettier than Oblivion but otherwise it's the same simple action (with RPG elements) game, even the new things they added weren't a risk, they were already well tested as Oblivion mods. I would like to them to have added some depth, choices and real consequences, sadly they pandered to the lowest common denominator yet again. The average age of gamers is 37, I really can't understand why they're so scared of making games that require a brain to play, I really do fear for Fallout 4.

Good to hear about KOA, the poor sods at that company deserve a break, that said if their luck continues as it is then it'll be EA who pick up that I.P and everyone knows what a lovely company they are to work for.

I feel I'm kinda rail roading this thread so my last word. TBH dude the reasons are simple ... it's because people like the guy who started this look only at reviews, look at sequels, look no further for their gaming kicks and instead sit playing the same old tried and tested games instead of going with their gut and trying something different and as a result all these devs see is the money going into these and playing it safe .... oh and LOL Fallout 4 is going to be like Skyrim with less dragons and more laser guns

Two games I'm looking forward to this year are both turn based strategy, both based on the same franchise. One is XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the other is Xenonauts. Both of them are based on the X-COM series, but I imagine both of the aforementioned games will vary wildly. I am looking forward to both of them as strategy games, particularly turn-based ones, are few and far between.

The only other game I was looking forward to was Bioshock: Infinite, but that's been put back.

I know how you feel, being going thru the same phase to the point where I've sold half my gaming gear, Xbox, 3ds, all games and accessories have gonnnnne! Only have a PS3 and a Vita now. I don't miss the other stuff and just recently my interest in gaming has made a mini comeback.

I've completed Uncharted 3 on crushing, cleaning remaining trophies for the platinum now.

I got stuck into Dead Island at the weekend, that game is a lot of fun, but the sound effects creep me out!!! haha.

Also to add to that, PSN+ is giving free games to every subscriber!!! I set it to download the excellent Darksiders, I love the demo from years ago but never got round to buying it.

So all in all, I'm enjoying gaming again but I'm not over doing it, as to much of a good thing is a bad thing imo.

I now buy a lot fewer games than I used to and it's the more 'unique' of the games that I go for to keep things interesting.

Catherine was the last one I got and that was fabulous. Really looking forward to the next Quantic Dream offering as well.

EPIC have taken on a good number of the dev team but the Amalur IP is another matter entirely and may, possibly, never be seen again as it's now the property of Rhode Island so a legal labyrinth to go through, at the moment.

The actual engine/level design etc might pop up in the future as something else entirely, though. There's currently more chance of that happening than any actual KoA 2.

Innovation is the thing that's lacking, or an original take on existing genres.

The only two major upcoming titles I can think of for me to get excited about are X-Rebirth and that Watch Dogs that premiered at E3. Oh, and perhaps the Skyrim expansions if they're any cop.

There are loads of good indie games on Steam though; I enjoy downloading them and messing about.
