PS3 Crashing Every Day

Today is the third day in a row that my PS3 has frozen on the XMB or PS Store. I've then had to hold the button on the front down and reboot. Then I have to go through the process of restoring the file system.

Games and DVD's run perfect and no problems when it's working, it just tends to do this once a session.

Any ideas? It's a 320GB slim I bought in Feb!

I vacumed the vents last week. It's always kept really clean and spacious. The drive is over 50% free so I can't see what the problem is.

Was wondering if someone could help me please? My PS3 has started crashing alot. Sometimes when you go to turn it off, sometimes when you're on the store. I have been watching DVD's more often on my PS3 so whether it has something to do with that?

Tonight I turned it on, and just got a black screen and had to force a shutdown via the button on the front of the console. Is this ok?

Each time it does it, it does the quick file restore thing upon restart.

Just unsure as to what's causing this? The console is a 320GB slim and was bought in Feb.

Please help!

I would put bet on the HDD being the problem if it's doing the restoring database error. I would back up your Ps3 and maybe get a new HDD and see how it is with new one.

Well it's covered under warrenty. It does seem to be since I've been watching DVD's on it each day, it's strange.

I don't want to go to the extreme of changing the hard drive.

I had been playing Max Payne 3 for a week and it didn't happen once.

Swapping out the HDD is very easy to do. It does sound like your HDD is the likely culprit.

I've had a similar problem recently, my PS3 twice when turned on didn't display a picture and had to do a hard re-set to solve the problem. The last time it did the blank screen thing was i exited a game PES and the screen went blank, i could hear the XMB menu when you scroll around but no picture.

I've changed the HDD in a PS3 before. But this was only bought in Feb so it'll be returned if it turns out it is faulty.

Is there anything I can do first before going to those lengths?

When you say a hard reset, do you mean restore the whole system to factory settings?

It does indeed sound like its faulty, I'd get it replaced as your still under warranty. The problem with your current PS3 isn't going to get fixed tbh.

But what could it be? It is since I have started watching DVD's.

Is it really worth all the hassle of getting it returned? Should I not wait another week just to see if it was fluke that it happened a few times in a row?

It does sound like its a HDD problem.
If you have a spare drive to try out and see if the problem re occurs, if it doesn't, then the HDD has a fault on it. Sounds the most likely suspect.

In the meantime, if your can; I'd get as many game saves off onto a memory stick just to be on the safe side.

Sorry i meant i've had to hold the power button down to switch off and when the system starts its a blank screen, I then have to reset the video output by holding down the power button on restart and wait for the 2 beeps.

I've just solved my problem with the blank screen and it seems fine.

I've just swapped my HDMI cable and used the one from the Sky Box and hey presto the problem looks like its gone.

I think I might try a few things first. Not changing the hard drive as I don't have a spare one.

My 320gb slim has been doing this for several weeks. It'll freeze up and crash during games, as well as doing simple things like going on the store, netflix etc.

Even swapped the harddrive at the weekend for a new 500gb one and the problem still exists. Frozen during Skyrim and Heavy Rain this week already. I'm thinking it must be a fault somewhere else in the console rather then it being hard drive, if I were a betting man I'd say it must be attributed to a recent firmware update from Sony.

One thing you could try is a database rebuild, have a look at http://www.ps3trophies.com/forums/tr...ter-speed.html for info on how to do it.

Yeah that's option 4 in safe mode right? What does it do?

Seeing as the last firmware update (v4.11) was released in February and you seem to be in the extreme minority of users facing this type of problem, I would not be blaming the firmware.

Crashes happen all the time. I had a crash yesterday in Transformers: War For Cybertron and I used to have frequent crashes with BF3 when I was playing it.

It speeds things up a bit. Like a PC, the more you install, remove stuff the console can slow down. This optimises the system. Might not help you with your issue but it cant hurt to try.

I had it crash the other day in Batman Arkham City. I might give this a go tonight. Last did it months ago and with trying all the games given away on PSN+ over the past 6 months it might be worth my while.

Yeah I think I might do. I have about 50 CD's on there though and I'll have to re-add a photo to each album, and then rename the album each game is in. Such a chore.

Ok, I did 'Option 4 - Rebuild Database'. I've done it before and it usually erases all the images I have within my music albums, messages, and folder names.

However this time, all the images within my music remained, but the organised folders and messages were all deleted.

Does this mean it hasn't done it properly? Whenever I did this last year I remember it annoying me as I had to re-add photos to all my albums.

It finished 100%, but the above leaves me unsure?

I have also started leaving my Official Stereo Headphones USB Dongle unplugged all the time incase that causes a problem. I usually have it pligged in constantly but not sure whether than can cause problems.

It appears to be DVD related.

Last night it crashed on a black screen when loading a DVD, and today all I did was put a DVD in and I had a black screen appear.

Rebooted and all is fine and playing a DVD. Any ideas what this could be please?

The laser on the drive. I'd just take it back and have it replaced tbh. It's still under warranty. A lot less hassle than trying to work round the problem.
