Is is the closing or opening ceremony?

I was looking forward to the Olympic concert...it's the opening ceremony. After the awful Jubilee concert, I'm worried whether we can actually pull off a decent opening ceremony for the Olympics. I hope Gary bloody Barlow isn't involved.

I think Coldplay are playing the closing ceremony.

McCartney, Rolling Stones or Pink Floyd.




They are the biggest and best musicians Britain has.

And as someone else has already said, I don't want Gary Barlow anywhere near it He'll be whipping out Robbie Williams and Spice Girls:yawn::sleep:

What about Little Mix,Adele,Ellie Goulding,Leona,Alexandra,Cheryl,Take That etc...

I may well be wrong, but I believe that Paul McCartney is doing the opening ceremony and Adele and Coldplay the closing ceremony.

I'm not that keen on Adele or Coldplay and, if last Monday's concert is anything to go by, Macca may well be past his best, but I still feel the selection of these artists does make a lot of sense, because:-

Paul McCartney is one of two surviving members of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed musical act this country has ever produced.

Adele and Coldplay are two of the most successful British acts of recent years.

I thought I read McCartney was closing the show?

I would say were rather than are in relation to biggest and best musicians. I would also say that Britain is pleased with a whole range of great musicians. However, James Paul's voice is past it unfortunately and the Stones do trade on past glories great as they were. Judging by Live8 though Floyd are still up to it and their music might suit the occasion. The Who played Superbowl a few years ago and were fine.

Still I'm expecting Coldplay and Adele who qualify as biggest and best musicians and are more current.

I'm a huge fan of Sir Paul but I was shocked at how bad he sounded at the Diamond Jubilee Concert. I think he should maybe try and take about a year or so off to rest his vocal chords or maybe hire a vocal coach. If he carry's on the way his voice is heading he will start tarnishing his legacy.

I'd be quite surprised if Muse don't play some part in either the opening or closing ceremonies considering they're the biggest rock band this country has produced in a long time

Coldplay are doing the Paralympics not the actual Olympics.

I think Muse are a great idea, I'm pretty sure Macca's been confirmed. I think Adele would be a brilliant addition but her fear of huge crowds could be an issue.

I think we need to be showcasing Britain's fantastic rock history, that Jubilee concert did not do the British music scene justice and was just a 'People on Gary Barlow's phone book' concert.

Leona will be part of it, probably America-style butchering our already terrible national anthem (or monarch's anthem as it should be referred to)

McCartney is closing the opening. Adele will definitely be involved somewhere.

I expect the Stones will play a part also. Its their home city and they are the biggest act ever to come out of it.

In terms of urban act Taio Cruz would be a good choice.

I had heard that Bowie had retired completely due to his voice being shot.

Would love to see Ray Davies perform "Waterloo Sunset". These are the London Olympics and that song is unquestionably the greatest ever song about London.

Again, for a London Olympics how about a good old Cockney knees up? Does Danny Boyle have Chas 'n' Dave's telephone numbers?

I'd hate to break it to you, but it's about the country, not London as is the regular mistake with everything England does. Anything north of Watford is considered to ba a complete non entity. It's quite disgusting considering the fact that there's towns in the mid to north of England that are so poor that they can't afford to have council offices that are open to public enquiry due to understaffing because of funds - places where, in 2004 they demolished a street with the government promising to fund a rebuild, but they pulled all finances after getting the olympics. Shocker.

It's a good job everyone in England lives in London or they may feel constantly overlooked and neglected.

First let me state that I myself live north of Watford. If the government did what you say then it is disgusting, but blame the government for that and not the people of London whose taxes have subsidised the rest of the UK for years, and don't begrudge their city being awarded this major event.

If the games were being held in Manchester I'd expect a Manchester theme, with one or more of the famous Manchester acts appearing. If the games were being held in Glasgow I'd expect a Glasgow/Scottish theme. As the games are being held in London is it wrong to have a London element ("Waterloo Sunset", Chas 'n' Dave) as part of a general British theme?

The thing is that anywhere other than London wouldn't even be considered as a thought to be represented. England = London and screw the rest of them.

Not quite true. Two other British cities have actually been considered in the last twenty years, but both were unfortunately rejected.

Birmingham put in a very good bid for the 1992 Olympics and Manchester put in an equally good bid for the 2000 Olympics. I would have loved to have seen one of those cities succeed, but it was not the case.

In a way, you have a point, because as far as the International Olympic Committee is concerned London is the only city in the United Kingdom capable of staging this event. I believe them to be wrong, but that's how it is. Thus, when London bid for the 2012 games the IOC took that bid a lot more seriously than it did the ones from Birmingham and Manchester and the result was what we will see at the end of next month.
