How often (and how much) do you drink?
I really fancy a bottle of wine tonight, but I know I'll be having a bottle tomorrow night and possibly Sunday night too
Now I'm in two minds about having a drink tonight as it seems wrong to drink every day of the weekend Was speaking to a colleague who sees nothing wrong with it, I just feel guilty for some reason Although I did say I can't just have one glass, I need to finish the bottle ![]() How often do you drink alcohol, and how much? |

I share a bottle of wine with my husband probably two nights a week, though we do sometimes drink more than one bottle between us when we're eating out. I only have nights out with friends once every few weeks now but when I do I can drink anything between 5 and 10 units.
Like you, I often find it difficult to stop once I start but my husband stops me from going overboard. I'm not telling you what to do, but a whole bottle of wine three nights in a row is a fair amount. It's not really going to harm you though, especially if you give your liver a break for a few days afterwards. |

I've really tried to cut down over the last year.
I used to be able to drink a bottle of wine in an evening and not evening think about it. Sometimes two bottles. I would drink almost every day and get drunk most weekends. Now I try to have 3 or 4 "dry" days a week, a bottle of wine lasts me two evenings and I've only been properly drunk 2 or 3 times this year. I find it fairly easy not to drink when I'm in the house (despite being surrounded by lots of the stuff), it's just that I find it impossible not to drink when out and others are drinking. |

I will always drink on Friday and Saturday, usually one night we will be out (either in town or at a party or something) the other I'll drink whilst catching up on the weeks TV or DVD's. I'll usually get through a fair few cans/bottles when we stay in but we usually stay up until at least 4am.
I drink on Sunday if there's a footy match I'm interested in and we go to the pub and we always go to the pub quiz on a Monday night so I drink there. We occasionally go to a quiz on a Tuesday or Wednesday and sometimes watch midweek football. That's pretty rare though so it's usually Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday dry. I won't get drunk on a week night, I'll usually limit it to four pints. To be honest it's only work that stops me, if I've got a week off I'll usually have a few drinks every night. |

Friday and/or Saturday night - 5 pints of tasty real ale.
Very rarely drink at home. Maybe one or two bottle conditioned ales a month |

Once or twice a year I'll have a shandy or two. I'm such a drunkard.

I don't feel the need to drink every night, but I do like a good drink once a week (occasionally twice a week), usually on a Saturday. Once I've had one drink though, I can't stop until I've drank everything in the house or physically crash out - whichever occurs first. I'm only a small bloke but will regularly have around sixteen pints a session, or say ten pints & a couple of bottles of wine. So it's impossible for me to have, say, the odd glass of wine with a meal like the missus during the week - or one pint on the way home from work with the lads. I only wish I could & really hate the fact that once I've had one, it completely consumes me. For this reason I consider myself an alcoholic, albeit a functioning one that holds down a job & exerts discipline on himself over alcohol most of the week. I also went five years completely dry between 2001 & 2006 - but I always knew I'd drink again. Unlike with your hubbie, there's no stopping me once I start sadly. The only good thing is I am a pathetic drunk, not a nasty one thankfully. |

That struck a chord with me Mrs de Winter.

To look at the positives, at least you and I both seem aware of our faults... |

He finds it difficult to stop me sometimes, because once I feel the buzz of alcohol I do feel like I have to have more and more and there have been a few occasions where I've got unfairly very annoyed at him for not letting me have "just one more glass". My mother struggled with alcoholism for years and I have certainly inherited her addictive personality (not to mention most of her other problems) so it is a worry for me too.
I hate the way my brain changes and I lose any sense of willpower as soon as any alcohol hits my blood stream. To look at the positives, at least you and I both seem aware of our faults... I'm not looking to find blame, but my father too was an alcoholic although not a binge one like me - he had to have 6 or 7 pints every night of the week, yet never drank in the house & always went to work of a morning. I've often wondered if it was genetic as his father too had problems with drink. Like you say though, I am well aware of my faults & the reason I initially stopped altogether in 2001 was because we were short of money back then, and I was determined that my 'weakness' wouldn't stop our then young daughter from ever going without. Pretty much everything you've said above could have been penned about me, almost to the word. Like you, I too have an addictive personality & the very first sip alters my mindset. I must admit also that it felt embarrassing to write out what I did, yet I felt strangely relieved once I had. Thanks for your kind reply. |

Starting the working week off with 'a head on' I just can't cope with!!To the posters above - don't feel alone. I can go for days, nay even a week or two, without too - and I feel grateful for at least that!

Despite my username, I'm a very good girl during the week and ensure that I don't drink Sundays (unless day off the next day or special occasion), Mon, Tues, Weds or Thurs. I just can't cope with hangover anymore. I got wrecked last Sunday and still feel like I'm recovering from that. Won't be drinking tonight but have a birthday meal to go to tomorrow night so will be ready for the wine then!

See the thing with alcohol is that the more you drink the more you convince yourself its normal. I've been drinking more and more lately and it's only when I had to fill out the pre assessment form for an operation that I realised just how much I drink and I was ashamed writing it down. I stopped drinking altogether on Monday as that will give me two weeks to clear my system of alcohol and it's not easy, i'd love a glass of wine tonight. I feel like I haven't drunk in ages and it's only been 3 nights! It does no harm to take a step back now and then, try and remember how many units you had during the week and then take a week off to get yourself back to a normal level of drinking.

Too often and too much. I am aware of it, but I function perfectly well running my business. I know I have to sort it though. |

I'm really random with my drinking days. Sometimes I'll drink all weekend and sometimes through the week, and then go like 3 weeks without alcohol. I'd say average about 2-3 times a week.
And Fizzle, have the wine! Why not eh. |

I usually have a bottle of red on a Friday, end of the working week and all that. I job share though, so I often have a few on Wednesdays which is technically the end of my working week.

I don't drink regularly. I work in a bar and the thought of drinking after a shift is not appealing because I'm surrounded by alcohol all day.
I have to really want to drink alcohol otherwise I don't enjoy it. I'd rather drink coke or lemonade. |
