Sony Geometry Problems
I have an KV36FS70. The geometry on this set is terrible and Sony cannot recommend anyone who can set the tv up correctly. Can onyone recommend an engineer that could do this?. I live in North London.

how old is that model? we have a KV or KX60 (or similar) 28" vega set, and the geometry is shot on that two. my wife says ahe can't notice, but its been pretty bad for stuff like the captions on the news channels for ages.
IIRC, its pretty much impossible to fix - although either the vertical or the horizonatal could be improved a bit more than the other. the day that tv actually dies, and there's some money in the kitty to buy a new one will be a great day! sorry, thats not much help - if you do a search on google you can find out more about it - i did at the time, and decided i was pretty much stuck with it unfortunately. sony apparently allow for a discrepancy of up to 7mm before its deemed to be "faulty" -which is pretty outrageous. but apparently in newer models they've fixed this issue. Many newer Sony's have a customer menu for adjusting the "tilt" of the picture.

Suggest using the test cards on a DVD with THX setup.

It's a lot easier now that you can do it from the front (as it were).
Sony domestic sets have had bad geometry since the seventies, except in these days you had to make the adjustments from the back of the set with a mirror perched in front of it! Their professional monitors are usually fine, so I don't understand why the domestic ones aren't. Price I suppose... |

I also think it's about time TV manufacturers gave you easy access and control of picture geometry set-up just like you get with computer monitors. Surely they can have a default setting to return them to manufacturers factory settings should you get into trouble and make a mess of things, but I don't see a problem with monitors so why should there be with TVs?

To anyone who accesses the sevice screen DO NOT reset to default settings, this can be expensive. |

Whenever you put your Sony tv in service mode, be careful to NOT enter any numbers, Sony uses a two digit entry method to activate/deactivate features (so, entering 22 might 'tell' the TV that it's a French model for example or 49 might do a reset whereby EVERY setting defaults to a setting that works but will need serious readjusting.
So, be careful in there! |

Careful
I had several problems with Sony geometry a year or so back. The tilt function does not correct for curvature at the top/bottom of the screen. This is controlled by compensating magnets on the neck of the tube. Several Sony service engineers tried to correct my problem, all with no success. In the end I insisted that the tv was 'not fit for purpose' and replaced it with a panasonic, which imo is much superior.
Good luck. |
