Christmas Number 1 (what's it gunna be?)
There's normally a lot of speculation and bookmakers odds floating around by this point in the year on who's going to be Christmas number 1.
I haven't heard anything yet this year, who's in the running other than the Band Aid 20 track? |

There was talk a couple of months back that Cat Stevens and Ronan Keating were going to record 'Father and Son'. Not sure how true that was, it seems rather unlikely, but that was an early favourite for Christmas number one.
With Band Aid 20 being released on 29th November, though, will it have the staying power to last for three weeks at number one? |

Pre sales for Band aid are apparently 750,000.
So they are expecting huge sales. I wonder if this will translate into real sales. Even so It's going to be the biggest first week sales of the year, and probabaly the biggest overall seller of the year, without a doubt. Whever it will hold off '50 grand for christmas' by the 25th is another matter

According to PeterKay.net, a special remix of Amarillo (Show me the way to) is being released. From the clip off the site it doesn't sound too bad!

I heard GLC's new one 'You Knows I love You' for the first time this morning. Very funny, and according to Chris Moyles released on Dec 13th. Has the potential to be a novelty hit.

I think the Band Aid song being released is a fairly clever marketing move. If it does make the christmas number 1 then they can say how amazingly well it did, staying at number 1 for 3 weeks in the very competitive few weeks. However, if it doesn't make christmas number 1 then they have the "it was realeased 3 weeks before christmas, so most people would have it by Christmas". However, in the final week, big fans who will really want to get it to christmas number one will buy ANOTHER copy, to add to their 5 that they will have already, so it will sell even more.
Just my thoughts anyway. jack |

Bookmakers odds for Christmas number 1:
Ladbrokes - Band Aid 20 1/8 Bet365 - Band Aid 1/16 William Hill - Only offering odds for Christmas Number 1 without Charity singles. I think thats pretty conclusive.

ISTR, in 1984, with Band Aid 1, didn't bookies pay out on what was Christmas Number 2 (Last Christmas by Wham- would have been Number 1 any other year)?

I think saying the song has been raped is quite an accurate way of describing the new version.

Do people really do this? I mean, does anyone really care THAT much whether or not it's No1?? Yup, everyone (ie Sun readers) will get caught up in the hysteria caused by it (The Sun), and they'll do anything. I saw footage of one shop when it opened on the day that the new version of Candle In The Wind released. People bought lots of that single :|What on earth do you do with more than one copy of the same (awful) song?? jack |

What on earth do you do with more than one copy of the same (awful) song?? Yes, my friend bought 5 copies of Mad World last year because he's a fan of Donnie Darko, we all got a copy of it for Christmas. I haven't heard the Peter Kay song and I don't think many people have, are any stations playing it? I don't think that is too likely to get the number. If the Bo'Selecta single is as funny as last year's then I would like to see that make it. I'm not overly impressed by Band Aid 20, it's OK but not the best version although I will probably buy it just to be apart of it (in the first week though to avoid it being Christmas number 1). |
