I've switched to the Beeb for live clashes due to Sky's attitude on commercial breaks (an insult to the viewer) and have to say that DC has grown to an extent that I don't miss Brundle anymore.

And I certainly don't miss the awful commentary of Croft.

Watchng the races recently om Sky, I have to say I have not noticed one advert, they must be subliminal ones !

Ah, but this weekend BBC are not live so it will be back to a break every 15/20 minutes in the Qualifying and Race build up.

With the free pass from Sky this weekend will the F1 channel be un-encrypted? Or will we still need to watch with a sky receiver?

I think it will be FTV rather than FTA so you will probably still need a sky reciever & viewing card.

i expect you are right but Sky are missing a trick in my opinion , a race not being covered by BBC would gain main viewers who had not seen the sky coverage before if they did make it FTA.
That might just encourage a few more to subscribe so they can watch all the remaining races of this great F1 season.

Would Sky even be allowed to run FTA?

if they went FTA, the amount of people in the UK who would realise, and then tune in with a standard satellite box, would be very few I would say.
It will most likely be FTV

The viewing figures will tell us roughly how many people there are out there who want to watch but just can't afford it.
Maybe there will be hardly any increase? in which case it would suggest everyone who wants it has it already.

will be fascinating

Will I need to watch the Indycar race before midnight (otherwise my Sky+ recording won't playback)?

If so, I might end up watching the race from 10pm after I am done with the Grand Prix (watching German GP from 7 until 10pm after son is in bed - you all know the story!)

I cannot say for certain, but I beleive the recording itself will be coded as FTV and will remain as such after the weekend.

You should be fine. I've recorded stuff from ESPN free weekends and watched after re-encryption.

I've Sky+'d some stuff off the ESPN freeview's the past 2 years & sometimes the recording has worked after the freeview weekend has ended, others its told me I need a subscription.

something worth thinking about if there have been mixed results??
maybe the recordings work if the channel was clear when you last viewed?
maybe the recordings don't work if you have visited the channel since the re-encryption?
something in the reciever memory?

My broadcaster watching habits this season (BBC in bold, Sky in italics):

Season so far
AUS (BBC QUAL, SKY RACE)
MAL (BBC QUAL, BBC RACE)
CHI (BBC QUAL, BBC RACE)
BAH (BBC QUAL, SKY RACE)
SPA (BBC QUAL, BBC RACE)
MON (BBC QUAL, BBC RACE)
CAN (SKY QUAL, SKY RACE)
VAL (BBC QUAL, BBC RACE)
BRIT (AT TRACK, TAPED BBC)

Plans for rest of season
GER (SKY QUAL, SKY RACE)
HUN (BBC QUAL, SKY RACE)
BEL (BBC QUAL, BBC RACE)
ITA (BBC QUAL, SKY RACE)
SIN (BBC QUAL, BBC RACE)
JAP (BBC QUAL, SKY RACE)
KR (BBC QUAL, BBC RACE)
IND (BBC QUAL, SKY RACE)
ABU (BBC QUAL, BBC RACE)
USA (SKY QUAL, SKY RACE)
BRA (BBC QUAL, BBC RACE)

BBC TV presentation
Jake Humphrey
Jake continues to impress in his role as presenter. No particular weaknesses but needs to tone down his obsessive pro-BBC opinions. 8/10

David Coulthard
One of the BBC's strongest assets. 'DC' has really grown after the departure of Brundle. He's in his comfort zone alongside Jake & Eddie in the pre/post show but in the commentary box alongside Ben Edwards he is really excelling. If there's any gripes he needs to let Ben commentate more on the exciting moments so we can get the 'Ben Effect'. 8/10

Eddie Jordan
'EJ' is as funny as ever and his shirts continue to impress and wow. Some of his features have been excellent. His visit to the Force India factory at Silverstone stands out. His ability to ask pressing questions to team bosses that no-one else would dare ask is his strongest point, like at Melbourne when he told Domenicalli the performance of Ferrari is 'just not good enough'. 7/10

Ben Edwards
Hiring the BTCC commentator Ben Edwards was the best thing the BBC could do. Listening to his commentary alongside his colour commentator predecessor Jonathan Legard shows how brilliant Ben is. He always injects passion and excitement into his commentary and it is never forced. His highlight has to be the ending laps in China. He was in his element and his years commentating on the exciting BTCC has stood him in good stead. He even has carried on his trademark 'Lights out and away we go'. 9/10

Lee McKenzie
It's obvious why Sky wanted Lee. She has cemented her position as the queen of the interviewing and she has revived Inside F1 into an unmissable programme. She has excellent rapport with the drivers and this can be seen at Silverstone with the now infamous moment when Seb Vettel asked if she'd wear her red dress. She also stepped into the presenting at Canada like it was second nature. 9/10

Gary Anderson
He started out the definite weakest link of the BBC TV presentation. It had me crying out in despair for Ted Kravitz but as the season has progressed, Gary has been getting steadily better and I've missed Ted less. He's not a natural broadcaster but his technical nous has stood him in good stead. I hope he continues improving as the season progresses. 6/10

BBC Radio 5 Live Presentation
James Allen
One of the two revelations of the season in broadcasting terms is James Allen. I remembered him as that cringeful ITV commentator who had an obsession with Lewis Hamilton and in earlier years Jenson Button (never forget Hungary 06). From the moment I watched FP2 in Australia I was amazed just how different he sounded. Gone is the cringeworthy performances. He is now doing a solid job and I even tuned into R5L at Silverstone because of his strong commentaries. Again like with Ben, just comparing James to Legard shows his class. I would like to see him move to the TV team to be in the pitlane alongside Gary next year though, as his FP1 pitlane reports makes him sound at home and shows Ted Kravitz who is boss! 8/10

Jennie Gow
Jennie moves to F1 from presenting Moto GP on the corporation and is doing a sound job. With Holly Samos and Natalie Pinkham as her predecessors she didn't have massive shoes to fill. 7/10

Jaime Alguersari
Jaime displays incredible English language skills and is a valuable edition to the R5L team this year this his up-to-date knowledge of the sport. He's always interesting to listen to. A good solid start. 7/10

Jonathan Legard
After a rather promising start in Canada returning to radio F1 commentary, his performance in the race in Valencia was abysmal. He really belittled Jaime in commentary, wouldn't let him speak and his commentary at the end when Lewis crashed lacked emotion, passion and excitement. It's a good job he is only doing a few races instead of James Allen, but he needs to pick him game up. 3/10

Sky Sports F1 Presentation Team
Simon Lazenby
He seems solid enough but lacks drive and enthusiasm. It seems to me that he doesn't feel comfortable track side and is better placed in a studio. 6/10

Damon Hill
Loved Damon as an F1 driver but his punditry has been a little wooden this year although he has been getting steadily better, especially when alongside Johnny Herbert. 6/10

Johnny Herbert
The best pundit Sky have. He's interesting and never afraid to air his views. I enjoy his punditry it has to be said. I hope Sky keep him. 7/10

Georgie Thompson
If James Allen was one revelation, Georgie Thompson is the other. She started off weakly in Australia but didn't let any criticism get to her head. She knuckled down and she is brilliant on The F1 Show. A definite candidate to present the main F1 programme. She's wasted standing next to the Sky Pad looking pretty. 8/10

David Croft
The weakest link in the Sky presentation team. Croft this season seems to me like a cross between an arrogant man and a talking Sky advert. I don't wish to know about 'Sky Race Control' every five minutes or what the football scores are. He also has a habit of shouting so loudly at the start I can barely understand him. Canada showed signs of improvement however. I also really enjoyed his Goodwood commentary which goes to show he CAN do the job. 4/10

Martin Brundle
Back to his best after a couple of stale years at the BBC where he never really felt at home. His gridwalks remain unmissable TV and his commentary remains strong and witty too. Deserves his role as the face of Sky. 8/10

Ted Kravitz
Ted is, as ever, a broadcasting natural. His 'From the Pitlane Notebook' videos remain completely unmissable and he never misses a trick. Also a natural in front of the camera on the F1 Show with Georgie. Nothing much more needs to be said. 8/10

Natalie Pinkham
Natalie has been the other weak link in Sky's coverage this year. She must be under pressure from Georgie, who should have been given the driver interviewing brief in my opinion. Too often Natalie's questions have felt light and airy and she resorts to flirting with the drivers a little too much. Her features too have been hit or miss. She was never that strong on R5L last year and needs to really get her act together or she could be axed from the Sky F1 team. 5/10

Opening Credits
BBC
Visuals - 7/10
Audio - 10/10

Sky
Visuals - 10/10
Audio - 5/10

Overall Coverage
BBC TV - 8/10
Sky TV - 8/10

Sorry for the rather winded post. I'll wrap up there!

Bet it's bloody Kai Ebel doing the 'podium interviews' dressed in bright pink doing the macarena.
