Morning all, Troughton rewatch ongoing
Watching and listening to this story again after four years I kind of forgot how many memorable moments you get in this story. I .think this story is definitely on a par with Power as one of the best ever dalek stories ever
Man I love David Whittaker's writing! That man could write interesting believable characters you really felt for and understood. I rather love the relationships that develop between Kemel, Jamie and Victoria. There’s a kind of deference and politeness there which feels sweet and respectful
Evil feels like the ultimate story of manipulation because of the presence of the Daleks. It’s interesting to watch the fathers and daughters .You have Waterfield who is doing everything to keep his daughter safe and feels the guilt as people die, Victoria who is stoic whilst paraded for an hourly inspection by the daleks. Maxtible, who twists and turns in his loyalties to gain the ‘secret ‘from the Daleks and manipulates his daughters suitor, Terrall, who almost loses his sanity. You feel Ruth and Terrall's relationship is doomed in that house.
Maxtible is quite mad at the end due to the Dalek factor although his ‘gold’ fever pushes him over the edge too and I find his ‘kill, kill, kill, kill’ mantra as he attacks Kemel at the end really chilling. For some reason I thought I remembered Maxtible died at the end but obviously not.
Of course the most echoing manipulation is when the Doctor gives Jamie to the daleks experiment. Jamie overhears the plan and believes he is betrayed which is deliberate. I love the scene below in Episode 5 where Jamie confronts the Doctor in Maxtible's laboratory
DALEK: Turn around. Pick up the human female. Obey. Obey! Hurry! Hurry! Move into the cabinet. Obey! Move! (Kemel carries Victoria inside and the Dalek follows. After a while, the Doctor, Jamie and Waterfield enter.)
DOCTOR: Well, Jamie, the experiment's nearly over. I've had no sleep. I've been up all night, but it's been worth it.
JAMIE: Och, don't touch me!
DOCTOR: Oh, now what's the matter?
JAMIE: Anyone would think this was a little game.
DOCTOR: No it is not a game.
JAMIE: Of course it isn't, Doctor. People have died. The Daleks are all over the place, fit to murder the lot of us, and all you can say is you've had a good night's work.
DOCTOR: Jamie.
JAMIE: No, Doctor. Look, I'm telling you this. You and me, we're finished. You're just too callous for me. Anything goes by the board. Anything at all.
DOCTOR: That's just not true, Jamie. I've never held that the end justifies the means.
JAMIE: Och, words. What do I care about words? You don't give that much for a living soul except yourself.
DOCTOR: I care about life. I care about human beings. Do you think I let you go through that Dalek test lightly?
JAMIE: I don't know. Did you? Look, Doctor, just whose side are you on?
(
Of course there is then the completely brilliant following scene of Daleks playing trains with the Doctor and his utter joy as a scientist . I love Jamie’s scepticism and almost sulk when he has to say hello to the Daleks
As Daveyboy said in his opening post what helps with this story are the changes of location., present day 1966 ( nice touch of trying to imagine Jamie talking to the ‘lassies’ in the café), 1866 and Skaro. I like the present day characters too ( although too confusing at times with only audio to remember sometimes who is who) but the build up to the climax of Episode 1 is really well paced
I did feel that the Dalek Emperor ordering the Doctor to ‘ Spread the Dalek factor throughout the entire history of earth’ climax was hyperbole but hey it’s a small point overall. I know the length can be an issue but I watched it over three nights and it’s a lot easier to see the complexity in the story, appreciate the work in the story in bits.
Have to remind myself this story would have been seen over 7 weeks so maybe not designed to be seen in one go.
