Any one used / using 3.5" HDD as their main ps3 drive?

I'm usng my ps3 for play tv and with my ps+ account and frequent large game downloads, could do with a bigger drive from my current 500gb.

Rather than upgrading to a 2.5" 1tb WD blue drive - thought I would look into dangiling a 3.5" 2tb drive out of the ps3 (I think 2tb is the max due to it using FAT32? )

Anyone done it? Easy setup for 80gb phat

I see this item - but think it's only for the 60gb original model

Id ideally like the 3.5" drive to get its power from the ps3 rather than have its own power source...

Surely anything that would fit the 60GB would fit other fats? I don't think any hardware was removed, just the codecs and formats it would play.

The Ps3 does not use Fat32 it uses a Linux file system It's only external drives that use fat32 I'm not sure limit though I've got 1tb in mine.

When backing up, would it not carry over large hd files larger than the fat32 limit of 4gb? So I'd basically loose all files over 4gb - would it keep my play tv recordings?

Looks like the max the ps3 can read internally is 1tb so I'll just buy a 2.5 1tb drive

my understanding is that the PS3 formats the backup drive so only the PS3 can read the HDD and not a PC

Nope, my PC reads my PS3 backup drive just fine. I formatted the backup drive as Fat32 prior to plugging it into my PS3. I think that Window XP up lost the ability to format in FAT32 so you need a third party program. Plenty of them out there. I use FAT32FORMAT.

So long story short... Will a 7gb mp4 video file that's on my drive now, backup onto the ext drive, and I can then put back (restore) and watch it with the new drive?
