Taking the Cat for a Walk
Anyone do this?
Mine loves it. I have to pick my route...avoiding roads, and usually go when its dark because I feel daft, but my cat absolutely loves coming for walk with me. |

Aw I had a wee cat that used to come for walks with me and the kids. Loved her to bits.

Our late cat used to come for a walk with me and OH when we walked the dog, it was safe as we live surrounded by countryside.
She never wanted to go far though, so if we wanted a long walk we would sneak out when she was asleep. |

We've just started letting our kittens explore the garden on their leases! They took a while to stop being so overwhelmed but I think they liked it. I'm quite looking forward to taking them for walks, although I think all my neighbours will think I'm bonkers!

We had a cat who used to follow us when we took the dog for a walk, but when we got so far he'd sit down and start to howl so we'd try and sneak out when he wasn't looking. But once he started to follow my daughter when she took the dog with her on her paper round and she managed to grab him and put him in the paper bag so he had quite a long ride, if not walk.

I'm trying to lead train my kitten but he's being very wierd. I was using a sock as a jumper with a lead attached and he was fine but now he's got a walking jacket. Every time I put his walking jacket on he plays dead for about 20 mins before he will explore but then he is fine after that. We're still just letting im walk in the garden on it and he seems to like it but we're going to try him elsewhere as his confidence grows.

I used to but it was such a hassle. I couldn't manage the dogs and her so it was seperate walks. I'd have to pick her up if a dog came by - rare as I'd walk her through the field behind my house which is for horses.
But so embarressing when people saw me ![]() I've enriched her home environment instead - and she can sniff the dogs when they get back

Best way to take a cat for a walk is to pretend it's taking you for one. Actually, there's no pretence, it is. |

My Tabitha used to follow me when I used to walk up to the local shop near my old flat. I didn't want her near the road so I used to turn back and then wait for her to fall asleep so I could sneak out again (she still followed me sometimes) - or alternatively, take the car.
When she was confined to the house after she broke her leg, she periodically wailed pitifully to be let out and the only way I could pacify her was to apply a lead and walk her round the block. Twice a day for 2-4 weeks..... I found it a bit embarrassing but Tabitha had a wound and a limp which I hope explained to any onlookers what I was doing Tabitha loved her walks and loved following me round my quiet road, even up to the day before she was put to sleep.

How did you get your cat to move? I tried this with my cat but he would just lie there and wouldn't move. I have to drag the leash to get him to move an inch.

![]() My usual routes for walking involve roads. I either sneak out whilst she isn't looking or leave her in the house so she isn't tempted to follow. My "cat walk" route involves no roads so no need for a leash for that with her. God knows what the neighbours think though. I'm sure they probably call me that crazy cat woman. |
