I tend to agree. I always state that individuals should make their mind up based on balanced opinions and by trying each out. If my Dad was after a smartphone I might even recommend an iPhone to him as they are nice and simple.

The only thing I object to is the belief that (some) people have that Apple invented all this stuff and that Android is for those who cant afford Apple !? Thats just madness.

If im buying a fridge I check out all the options, same if im buying a car or a TV or a hoover. My last upgrade was from an HTC Desire. I ended up with a Samsung Galaxy Nexus but looked at various phones by HTC, Motorola, Samsung and I was even quite tempted by a Nokia Windows phone. I cant understand this strange brand loyalty that people have towards Apple ?? They release a phone with a fundamental design flaw in the aerial yet people still buy it in their millions !? if they were a lovely cuddly company then maybe I could get it but as companies go they arent even a particularly nice or caring one (IMHO).

Back in the early days they were seen as the likeable underdog compared to Microsoft. It seems (to me) that they have now become everything they used to stand against.

Bill Gates has vowed to use his money to eradicate Malaria. Jobs vowed to spend every last penny eradicating Android ......

Oh yeah, because Facetime was an instant hit wasn't it! Take video calling which has been out for years and make it instantly useless to anyone without an iphone and without wifi. Yep, very usable! Oh but i hear you say, it can now be used over a cell network. Yep years late apple get it right. Nothing new there then eh?

Bluetooth. They sure made that batter didnt they! Doesn't even bloody work

Reception whilst trying to use it as a phone. Useless.

iMessage. When it works its fine but half the time they dont bloody send.

Apple take others ideas and make them worse. Never better.

Android is full of gimmicks and features which seem great on paper but offer no practicality to the average user.
Again, only to you. Since Android is the fastest selling mobile OS and the Galaxy S3 has trumped Apple in pre order sales and will more than likely squash them with sales soon, only die hard apple fans think like you...

IOS is simple and easy to update. Other OS's are confusing to the average user.
Says who? You?...... I'm an average user and i dont get confused at all. My 81 year old nan managed to do her updates on her SE Xperia without any hassle. Mind you, i guess its only people like you who find it hard. How embarrassing for you.....

iOS is only now easy to update since 5. Before that was a right carry on. Need to have a computer just to simply use the damned phone. Yep, that made things easier didnt it!

See this is what die hard apple fans do. They forget that iOS was absolutely useless until 5. Even now its only just starting to catch up with other mobile OS's feature wise.

I have an iphone 4S, and while it feels solid, it is the most useless phone i have ever had. Everything is a chore from making calls to turning on wifi.

Yup.

Took them years to do something Android users had been doing for years!

This is what i mean. Apple nuts keep claiming apple innovate but they don't. They simply pinch other peoples ideas and add them years later!

Kinda like the SD card nonsense on macs. Die hards claimed it was easier to plug whatever device in using the cable. Now they praise apple for adding the card reader after PC users have been using them for as long as i can remember!

Yes and automated daily over the air backups out of the box, something Androd still doesn't do without third party apps.

I wouldn't be surprised if the thing Apple aren't saying right now is NFC in the next iPhone and it'll be connected to the Pass thing they announced yesterday.

No doubt they'll announce it in such as way as to make it sound like it was their idea.

I will give them the fact that it could drive further stores to adopt the technology, but it'll still take a while to catch on because it'll require all new hardware. It's not going to happen overnight.

Backups of what?.....Android automatically backs up wifi passwords, settings, wallpapers, music, files, apps etc periodically....the only thing the user needs to do is set it once, and it's all native to the OS.

What, like Google? In Android (made by Google ) there is a setting, backup this phone with Google.

Done totally wire free by the way.

There is a lot of ignorant garbage written about Android isn't there.

aahhhhh. so the fact that it requires a third party app to FULLY backup my whole phone (including game states and media) means that Apple can claim they invented it I see now .....

The fact that ive been able to do 'daily over the air backups' like this for quite some time doesnt matter ??

Or, as previous poster has suggested, if you mean contacts, gmails and phone settings then this was the whole basis of Android and has been around for years..... I lose my phone ? i buy a new one, log in with my google ID and its automatically downloads my contacts, bookmarks, gmails, settings etc etc ... has done for years.

sheesh ....

From somewhere the sun doesn't shine.....what a load of rubbish, as Android has had native back-up features for ages now...right down to the brightness level of the phone display.

I assumed you meant the entire phone state (known as a Nandroid backup) that creates a full image copy of your phone - that requires extra apps. (previous post adjusted for clarity).

You didn't specify everything though. Titanium, the leading backup/restore app needs rooting which Joe Average certainly will not do.

The most important features e.g. contacts, photos, music, bookmarks, etc is done automatically.

ClockworkMod and EXT4 Recovery backup the whole phone, but again it needs rooting. Fresh out of the box with no rooting, the Google backup does the job for the user just fine.

I agree, the average user is only going to want to backup passwords, contacts, apps, music, photos etc.....more advanced backup options are available on Android, but obviously they aren't native.

But the standard back-up feature works really really well....when I restored my account on my Galaxy Nexus it even changed the screen brightness to the same level it was on my Nexus One....pretty impressive, and I'm sure, good enough for most users.

I went from the Samsung S2 to S3 started the phone up with new micro sim, logged into my gmail/play account. All my contacts/bookmarks/apps/settings (I have my phone on mute most of the time it went straight to mute) etc where on and ready to use within a few minutes. Put my old memory card in all my music was available. Anything else I want would take a few minutes what more would you actually want.

I was referring to everything in the phone.

For example if I lost my phone today and bought a new one, all I would have to do is put in my username/password and it would be restored over the air to the state it was at during last nights backup.

This is a great feature that all phones should do out of the box, I think Windows Phone 7 also does this but not certain.

Yep. I only use Nandroid if Im flashing ROMs. The standard Google backup does pretty much everything you would need as a standard user - im not sure what exactly the Apple one backs up to be honest ?? Im guessing it doesnt have to do media as this is all handled via itunes isnt it ?

Photos ? Google+ does that anyway. Or even Dropbox if youd prefer that.

Well, I like iPhone and I am also a typical iPhone user going by the survey that was released recently. In the UK the AVERAGE iPHONE USER...

Owns there home,
Has a career or profession rather than a "Job"(that is not the wording of the survey)
Drives a Audi ,Mercedes or BMW
Earns in excess of £26'000 per anum
Has Sky TV full package(Even I lol'd but its there)
Goes on 1 foreign and 3 domestic holidays a year (I assume they mean long weekends)

There was another 7 or 8 things I forgot, Oh and 7 of the worlds top 10 company's issues iPhone to managers and rather embarrassingly Google give iPhones to staff although this is expected to be phased out by 2016.

Anything bought over iTunes isn't technically backed up as it's already stored on Apple servers but from the users perspective it is as its restored just as it was.

Ahhhh ....

OK. the only things missing (that i can think of) would be game states (ie saved games) and any music/video that you had copied across I think but, to coin a phrase, 'there is an app for that' anyway

Everything else is (and has been for a while) stored by Google and would be downloaded OTA (by either 3G or wifi).
