If there is one genre that the PC totally kicks ass, it's the RTS genre. |

Bloody hell, this question was being asked on the letters page of Digitiser back in 1996. Only then, you had some people insisting the Amiga would rise again and kill the PC.

I bought a nice gaming PC a couple of years ago but soon after realised what a mistake that was. PC gaming is pretty much dead to me lol, but in general it's certainly not dying no. However the platform does mostly receive tarted up console games as that's where all the money is, it may be at the forefront of technology but not games. PC gaming will never die.

Hell, no! PC gaming is going from strength to strength. The advent of Steam has meant that buying/installing games has become even easier. Achievements, level editors, DLC, exclusive content has become a part of PC gaming.
I don't see it dying any time soon. Quite the opposite, in fact. |

The notion that PC gaming is in terminal decline is an oft repeated fallacy and one that is simply not supported by market figures.
From the small independent offerings, to the triple A titles, PC gaming is in very good heath indeed. An interesting thread on figures can be found here, although there are many titles missing from the listings, it does give a good flavour of the market at large. Also factor in the sheer longevity of many of the games on PC. They really have a life beyond a limited 3 month retail timespan. Just look at the wonders the 'DayZ' mod did for the three year old 'ARMA2'.....a fantastic base game in its own right, with a complexity, scope, scale and unrivalled content community propelled to the top of the Steams sales chart by word of mouth and buzz alone. PC gaming is the very opposite of dying. |

This old topic always used to come up a while back. Then it was a reasnoble point, but I think Steams revival of the PC market has stopped any real debate. On the contrary you could argue Pc gaming is in a golden age.
Mainstream big budget titles like Shogun 2, Football Manager, The Sims,Diablo 3, Battlefield 3, Starcraft 2, all sell well and get great reviews. Yet smaller, indie games can do really well, often aided by digital distribution, sometimes to the point where they become unexpected hits like Minecraft and Dear Esther. And many games feature mods and free editing tools provided by the devs.Skyrim and Portal 2 are good examples. I've never known why there is a perception that You have to be a Console gamer or PC Gamer, and you have to choose your allegiance. I happily game on both without seeing any conflict between the 2 machines |

Also because most AAA titles are multi-platform the constant need to upgrade your PC has been greatly slowed by having to make games work on aging consoles. My PC is nearly 4 years old and so far has run everything ive thrown at it without a hitch (although recently not on the highest settngs)

I recently had a choice of getting an Xbox 360, PS3 or new graphics card.
I put together a list of games I wanted to play which were: Assassins Creed Batman Arkham Asylum Borderlands Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Crysis Dead Space Dragon Age Fallout 3 Fifa 11 GTA 4 Mass Effect Need For Speed Shift PES 2011 Resident Evil 5 Street Fighter 4 After checking prices of the games and how they looked on youtube I went with a new PC graphics card. Glad I went with the PC, games load quicker and I can play most of them with maxed out settings, plus the price of games continue to be very competitive. Fifa 12 on PC is currently only £9.85 at shopto. |

PC gaming isn't dying, it's just that console gaming has exploded, bringing more people to that particular market. Then there's people like me who have a PC and a PS3 and play on both.
Most cross platform titles make it to the PC still. When this stops, then I might entertain the idea that PC gaming is on its way out, but I can't see that happening anytime soon. Steam and Amazon themselves provide enough incentive for publishers to keep on releasing PC games. |

Gaming Laptop's are expensive as hell as are some desk top's. My brother in law plays WOW and he is forever having to upgrade his PC just to have the game running smoothly. I looked into a gaming laptop a few weeks back and the prices started from around £1200 upwards for a decent one. No such costs with consoles.

£500 gets you a really good quad core desktop with 6GB of ram. Gaming laptops are expensive, but then all laptops are expensive compared to the desktop equivalents. You dont have a clue what your talking about PC gaming wise. |

You wouldn't even need an expensive laptop for WOW, and yeah gaming laptops do vary in price and can be expensive, but starting at £1200 ? try around 700-800 starting point.

As for Full HD (OMG) and 3D, you'll find most computers can do that. Laptops are rubbish, you don't have as much control over them as you would a PC. You can build a PC to play games for around £500 and have 3D and "FULL HD" and have the quality better than the console versions. |

Also, all games can be full HD on PC for £500. Hardly any games are full HD on consoles. I dont know why you keep goign on about laptops. There is no upper limit to what you can spend on a PC so you are just picking the most expensive you can find, rather than a very good PC that will do the job that came out 4 years ago!

hardly picking the most expensive. I was looking at gaming PC's/laptops in general at the time and most were 1k and over. Yeah there are quite a few available for around £500+ and it may well be cheaper to build one from scratch but not all of us can do that or have the know how and we look for something that's not gonna become outdated in a few months from now.
I admit I don't know much about PC gaming and tend to look on the box for the minimum requirements. I once asked on here (before I bought the laptop I have now, Acer Aspire 5750G) whether it would be ok to use for gaming and was told Yes but if i wanted a decent gaming laptop i'd be looking at £1000 and over. |
