Get rid of the DOG, STV!

I arrived home tonight and caught the last 15 minutes of the France-England game and was extremely surprised to see a faint STV logo on the top left of the screen.

I assumed that this was simply for the football coverage, but no, it was also there throughout Corrie (but moved to the left) and it's still there now.

What are they thinking of? A cheap, tacky logo permanently there to annoy!

It was bad enough for the last year or so when STV scrunched the end credits into a tiny illegible thumbnail, so small that you could never find out the name of an actor, or cameraman or director even! I thought that things were getting better in the last couple of weeks as they are now only scrunching the credits to one half of the screen.

But now they've introduced a DOG. To whom do we complain at STV?

Expect ITV1 to let their DOGs out in 2013 then

That'll cause some controversy.

.
I don't believe that ITV1 are daft enough to even consider a DOG on their broadcasts.

It's bad enough that (Channel) 5 have a horrible clunky DOG.

For what it's worth, I don't think that any of the five "terrestrial" channels should be permitted to have this on-screen clutter.

I would like them if they made them almost invisible , Sky has seen the sense for introducing a new policy on their DOG's by displaying them for 5 seconds then they dissapear.

It's already there on ITV1+1 and ITV1 HD. If they weren't daft enough to consider a DOG on ITV1, they wouldn't be daft enough to consider one on those channels either. But they are. They just don't want to deal with the flood of complaints that would follow adding one on the main channel.

UTV in N. Ireland has had a DOG for the past couple of years. Unfortunately, it looks like it's here to stay

Can I just ask why considering a DOG is daft? Outside of this forum I've not heard one person complain about it, so I doubt the majority of people care. (And why should/would Ofcom care enough to ban them, especially after the DSO?)

Why on earth do we simply sit back and accept things staying forever even if they are annoying? Couldn't somebody set up an online petition or a Facebook group threatening to boycott en mass watching UTV until the DOG has been removed?

But how do viewers possibly know what channel they are on after that?

BBC One and BBC Two both had dogs when they went digital back in 1998, this was only seen on the digital channels and such was the outcry, they were removed pretty much immediately!

They still exist on iPlayer though - as if the big highlighted logo underneath the video doesn't tell you which channel you're watching.

The UTV DOG, and especially the UTV +1 DOG are awful. Even the ITV 1+1 DOG is awful compared to say ITV 3+1 or ITV 4+1 who's DOGs are practically invisible. They should have uniform positioning and transparency across all channels. It seems each channel have their own settings.

ITV 4 is almost invisible at times. ITV 3 is not far behind. ITV 2 is bright enough to be off putting. ITV 1/UTV/ITV 1+1 are far too bright and noticeable on programming.

so much fuss over a channel logo. I wondered how long it'd be before STV introduced a D.O.G.

like others, I can see ITV1 introducing a D.O.G. very soon too. Btw if you think the ITV+1 D.O.G. is bad, watch ITV4 during sport and see how bright their DOG is

That's probably more to do with pirating issues though, especially it's just "BBC", rather than "BBC one" or whatever.

Just complained - feel free to cut and paste to yourview@stv.tv

I am disappointed to note that STV have started displaying a permanent on-screen logo on broadcasts. These logos were previously the domain of low budget satellite channels and are not what I expect from a quality broadcaster. With electronic programme guides, such branding is off-putting and unnecessary. I note that, as a Sky subscriber, I can watch identical programming on ITV1 London without any logo.

I hope you will reconsider and remove the logo or I will have to vote with my remote and view ITV1 instead - something I am sure your advertisers would not welcome.

I look forward to your reply.

Because the majority of viewers aren't stupid enough not to know what channel they're watching. YMMV.

Is it not just the HD channel that has it?

Technically inept as well!

Is there no limit to STV's technical wizardry?

I was watching the STV News last night at 7.00, in order to see the Edinburgh news, rather than the Glasgow news at 6.00.

As many will know, STV+1 has had a DOG since it started. A couple of weeks ago, STV introduced their DOG too, in what should be the same on-screen location.

You would think that STV would manage to register the two DOGS in exactly the same position, but no, STV managed to get them just out of alignment making the already naff logo twice as annoying. It looks blurry and defocused.

STV used to be an excellent local TV station, that even made many fine programmes in its Glasgow and Edinburgh studios. Sadly, It now looks just so cheap. When you look at the programming on the RTE channels in Ireland (similar population size) there is just no comparison. I know this last bit is off-topic but you do despair at STV's poor decision making and continued dumbing down. Sad.
