Rihanna - the perfect & best popstar of the moment?
What are peoples views on Rihanna? Cheryl Cole recently said Rihanna was the most perfect and best popstar around at the moment. Do you agree with her?
Rihanna recently broke a record in the UK for most single sales. She has overtaken the Beatles! did she deserve this honour? discuss. |

I'm a fan of Rihanna a big fan but she is far from it i would say Gaga, or Katy Perry fit it more correctly as they write, sing live and have a better overall control of their careers and have more avenues which they can take them Rihanna relies on Sex and Controversy to sell her music and there is only so far she can go with it.

, but it hasn't stopped her legacy from being huge.Lady Gaga is an interesting one because while she is pretty successful alot of her songs are rubbish and wouldn't be out of place on any Britney, Christina, Katy or Rihanna album. So I find her a bit overhyped if I am honest. For example. I find Beautiful by Christina far more inspiring than Born This Way is. Lady Gaga isn't really that good when you strip it all away and another issue I have with her is that I don't view her as real. I couldn't even tell you her actual name. |

She barely deserves to polish Ringo's cymbals. Chicken feed duties at Paul McCartney's farm is as close as she should get to The Beatles. |

I see your point but if you look at it neither KP or Gaga are that far behind in terms of sales in the UK Rihanna has the upper hand as her releases are quite prolific so theres more of her to buy in a shorter space of time.
I agree with Gaga though her music isn't as good as people make out and strip back the costumes and what do you have but again she has the full package writes sings and performs live which is a rarity which is why i think again whilst a great entertainer Katy Perry, Gaga and a whole host of others are ahead of Rihanna in that respect and fit ''popstar'' better Rihanna and Britney are perfectly manafactured stars. |

See I disagree. If you strip it all away from Lady Gaga she hasn't anything unique about her. If she did then she wouldn't have taken on an alter ego to be successful with. She is a very good writer but my question is why did she have to change her name and image to become successful? Adele didn't have to. So if any current popstar manafactured an image it was Lady Gaga. With Katy, Her songs are really generic without any meaning at all. At least some Rihanna songs have deep meaning within them. |

I think in a lot of ways she is, but that Katy Perry and Lady GaGa probably suit the title better imo.

I would say katy perry, at least she has some talent, rhianna has no talent whatsoever, just a puppet singing otner peoples songs who has to appear almost daily in the tabloids with very few clothes on to get exposure.

Lady Gaga writes more songs than Katy Perry does. |

No, Rihanna is so overexposed it is tiring. Her constant attention seeking antics like showing off her nipples in every outfit possible are desperate!
She is a puppet for her record company and management and they seem to want to milk her until shes dry. |

Katy co-writes all of her songs and a couple of songs on her debut she wrote alone, "Thinking of you" being one of them.

I guess the answer to the OP depends on the criteria we would use to define the "perfect popstar"

Hmm I don't get it.. why do UK people love Rihanna so much? I mean she's big everywhere, but especially there.

Lady Gaga writes more songs than Katy Perry does. Thinking Of You Mannequin One Of The Boys And her songs have a damn sight more meaning than Rihannas they may be vague and a bit vacuous but comapare it to S&M, Rude Boy, Cockiness, Birthday Cake for instance. So thats an invalid point i think the fact of the matter is you can argue about gaga having nothing with all the costumes thrown aside but put Rihanna in front of a mic or at a table with pen and ink and you have nothing in exactly the same manner she is good no denying but she is as much a product as a person. |

Just for clarification, Lady Gaga writes most of her lyrics with others having very minimal input. Arguing otherwise is silly considering the fact that she was a songwriter before making her own album with interscope.
Rihanna is just like spears, she's the puppet. It's why you never hear her talking about the intricacies of music, because she turns up, sings poorly, shakes her hips and leaves. Katy Perry would be alright if cats didn't die during her live vocal. |

For me, "The perfect & best popstar at the moment" would be a tie between Kelly Clarkson and Pink.

I disagree as she doesnt write her own stuff or is an amazing performer but she does have a strong back catalogue of hits.
BTW she probably broke the Beatles' record because she releases a new song every week |

I wouldn't say best (imo) but she's definitely slaying at the moment. I just hope her next album has a deeper meaning behind it like Rated R, and less of the sex songs tbh.

But, really, is there such a thing? Perfect??? For me, Rihanna is a bit of a weird dichotomy. For every great song she releases, there is another that is simply unlistenable. In spite of it having one of her greatest ever singles on it, I thought that Talk That Talk was easily her worst album of all time. She looks good. Has an interesting voice. Is clearly popular. But she's far from perfect. |

Katy perry has co-written a lot of songs in the same way gaga co-writes, nothing between them from songwrting perspective, they both need co-writers to help them write their songs.

As another person has said, Gaga was a songwriter before getting a record deal so I don't think she needs co-writers, only that they enhance it. She wrote You and I by herself. I think she's one of the only popstars out there who could be left with pen and paper and a recording studio and be able to produce a really good album by herself, as well as Pink. Katy probably could do a good job as well (the album tracks from her first album and Circle the drain from TD are actually quite good) but she can't sing for toffee so...

Lot's of people have alter egos, Elton John, David Bowie to name the obvious examples. Pop music is all about putting on a costume and living in a bit of a fantasy world. Especially considering her music doesn't exactly match the name Stefani Germannota (i think that's right..). She created the name when she was performing in small bars in New York alongside other acts who had outrageous names and performance styles. But the difference is she was Lady Gaga before she had a record deal. Rihanna for example was just a normal girl from Barbados but she has gradually turned into this sex-obsessed girl from the hood (not that there's anything wrong with that). And Adele's success, in my opinion, came mainly as a reaction to the sea of 140bpm dance songs that are all produced by the same people who are desperate to get the same success that the song that it's based on had. There are a thousand girls with nice voices singing songs about heartbreak out there. Like with Gaga and many other phenomenons, it was more to do with being there at the right place, right time. |
