Cat just had kittens - help please!

Woo my first post on the Pet forum!

Our young cat (maybe a year old?) had kittens at 4pm yesterday. She had hid under a bed to have them so we had to pull the bed up to get to them. This morning we put the kittens (there's four of them) on top of the bed in a nest type thing built up of a furry blanket. The cat took one of the kittens (the gray one, the others are all black) under the bed again. It has been crying a lot while the other 3 are mainly just sleeping. She seems to be going back and forth but I'm not sure if they are being fed. The 3 kittens are suckling on the blanket, I don't know if they are hungry or if it's for comfort.

The cat seemed to be doing a good job yesterday, she was keeping them close and warm and they were feeding on her, whether they were getting any milk from her I don't know.

Under instructions I got the kitten from under the bed and put it with the rest of them on top. The cat was having none of it and grabbed it and dragged it under the bed again.

Does anyone have any advice? I assume if she doesn't start looking after them we're going to have to? How long can they go without food?

its normal behaviour for mothering cats they find it safe under the bed moving them increases the risk of rejection i strongly suggest you leave well alone unless there is problems a friend of mine did not listen to my advice the first litter where killed off one by one by the mother because of disturbance ie moving them al round to dangerous places ( with wires and smothering them ) there second litter she had they finally listened to me and now i have one of her kittens so again just leave be

Yea I'm trying to stay out of the room as much as I can. I went in before to top up the cats milk and all the kittens are gone from the bed so I assume they are under now. I didn't look because I don't want to disturb them.

Thanks.

Yes, please don't pull them out from under the bed again. leave them where they are & don't handle them too much at the moment..

If you're worried about them, ring your local vet.

It might be a good idea to put her litter tray in the bedroom as well , as she won't want to venture far to do her business !

Did you know your cat was pregnant ?

I'd strongly advise you, in a couple of months when the kittens are weaned to get your cat neutered, Otherwise she could have 2 more litters this year & you could have masses of kittnes everywhere !

If you are receiving any kind of benefits or are on a low income. you'll get help.

Good luck !

Exactly this - make sure Mummy cat has food, water and somewhere to toilet on hand and then stay out of the room as much as you can. Leave her to it.

Do not move the kittens or disturb Mum is any way - she'll do what she needs to do.

Piccies please as soon as you can

Thanks for all the advice.

We knew she was pregnant just over a month ago when she started getting fat and not just 'bigger'.

Unfortunately we're going to have to move them once more because at the moment they are on/under my mams bed and that's no good for us or them. We did make a box and cushion it out a few weeks ago like you're supposed to but she wasn't having any of it. That's in the spare bedroom so that's where they'll be going tonight. At least they won't be disturbed then.

We moved her into the spare bedroom today. In doing so we found one the kittens (the last one out) dead and away from the other group under the bed. I just hope none of the others die, one of them looks particularly small.

I just popped my head in. She's snuggled in with them and I assume they are feeding well enough.

There will always be a runt. Runts often make the best pets.

Both of mine were runts ( sisters from the same mum and dad cat but six months apart).

Bookend is now a soppy, fluffy adult who eats for Britain and loves laying on my bed having her tummy rubbed and paws stroked . Gizmo is also an adultnow but not so big, but she is a real fesity one, I am the only one she will let pick her up , tickle her tummy which she loves etc, she is so loving but as I say very feisty with it.
