The Beatles - Why does the 'Let it be' album get so much criticism?

Of course it isn't their finest effort, but I can name at least 5 weaker albums in comparison.

'Let it be', 'Across the Universe', 'Get Back', 'Two of us' and 'Dig a Pony' are brilliant tracks. I'm not a huge fan of 'The Long and Winding Road' but you can't please everybody

I still think its a brilliant album, very underrated IMO

The only reason it gets a bad rap is because the Beatles set their standards so high that anything that wasn't a five star album was dismissed as a failure.

It has some great songs on it but there were a few weak cover songs on it which let it down

Maggie mae i'm sure was a traditional song which they redid. Actually a quick trip onto wikipedia shows that was the only one. My bad!

I love the Beatles but i just felt the overall quality of the album was not as good as most of the others.

I think Please Please Me, With The Beatles, Beatles for Sale, Help and the Yellow Submarine soundtrack are all weaker. I know some people are going to disagree with me there, but it's just my opinion alone

I like Across The Universe..........

And the rooftop footage of Get Back is great..........particularly that 'City Gent' ambling along the rooftop pretending to be only vaguely interested..............

I love Help

However, I too really love Let It Be its a nice bookend to go sort of back where they started in someway, but I think it would've been even better had they gone with how Paul had originally wanted, the 'Naked' version is beautifully raw and poignant

I've Got a Feeling is my favourite

IMO they should've included 'Dont Let Me Down' on the album - it would've given it an extra kick!

I've Got a Feeling is also on there, one of my favourite late Beatles' tracks.

Revolver or Sgt Pepper are often chosen as the best Beatles' album, but I've always liked Abbey Road, especially the 'melody' sections.

Let it Be wasn't really a Beatles project as it was remixed by Phil Spector and launched by Allen Klein to bring in some money for Apple. None of the Beatles could face mixing or producing the album themselves.

Could be The Beatles own attitude towards making it. This was the project that really tested their patience with eachother.

Help is a brilliant album, and the Yellow Submarine album is essentially an e.p anyway (should have been released that way) as it only has four original Beatles songs)

Let It Be gets flack because it has quite a bit of filler, hate to say it but Lennon's contributions bar Across The Universe are pretty lackluster for his previous standards. McCartney's contributions such as Long and Winding Road, Let It Be and Get Back save the album for me personally. (Although for the last two tracks I prefer the single versions)

I suppose another reason why fans struggle to connect with it is because the the sound is a bit off no doubt due to the lack of George Martin and the use of Phil Spector to produce the album. This was a source of serious friction towards the end of the Beatles because McCartney did not like the way Spector had produced certain tracks most notably The Long and Winding Road:

"While the released version of the song was very successful, the post-production modifications to the song by producer Phil Spector angered McCartney to the point that when he made his case in court for breaking up The Beatles as a legal entity, McCartney cited the treatment of "The Long and Winding Road" as one of six reasons for doing so. New versions of the song with simpler instrumentation were subsequently released by both The Beatles and McCartney."

The biggest reason however would be because this was their last album released and expectations would have been astronomically high, and lets be honest this is the Beatles so people wanted them to make another brilliant album. I think that while it is not that it is still a great album and has some terrific tunes on there. The Beatles knew when enough was enough and were smart enough not to carry on or reunite and as such their legacy has sustained. Let's remember though that the Beatles really managed to go out on a high since Abbey Road was the last album they made and is considered one of their best.
It's a shame in that regard that Let It Be was released after.
