The other thing with this is that it's only available to Three contract customers. They confirmed on their blog it's not available to PAYG customers.

I'll stick with my Truphone PAYG SIM for data abroad. Whilst it's not cheap everywhere for data, it's pretty good in the places I travel to (e.g. 20p per MB in the US), and it's on a PAYG basis, so you're only paying for what you actually use.

I read it as 50p connection per call both outgoing and incoming, which as I make calls less than a usually lasting less minute when in europe is extortionate.

So what is Three's definition of unlimited abroad then?

Still probably cheaper to get a local SIM.

If you are abroad and have an iPhone try out CityMaps2Go. Helped me out in several cities abroad when i've wanted to use the local networks.

£5 is pretty good to be honest. Not sure why some are moaning.

last year i went to Holland, in order to use data without being charged £1.28/mb on three i put a UK vodafone pay as you go sim card in to make use of the vodaphone passport offer.
although the passport offer only gave me 25mb per day ( up to midnight local time) for £2.00 it was more than enough.
While in Holland i used my phone to check e-mails, send photos as an e-mail attachement, web browsing, (looking for info on places) google googles, maps and so on.
before i went i did a bit of research on what uses data and how, by changing a few things such as using opera mini as my browsers, changing the resolution of emailed photos ( reduce photo size app) i managed to get my data down to below 25mb/day.
even with heavy use i was only using a maximum of 18mb, peaking one day at 23mb ( accoding to a data monitor widget)
so if the vodafone passport deal stays as it is on PAYG that will be my preffered choice over my three contract sim while away, with my three sim goign into an old non smart phone to receive calls/texts if required.

Buying a local sim was not an option in this case, however there are some good deals out there, the last time i checked you could buy a sim loaded with 2GB of data to use over a month for €20

The pay as you go/pre pay option is also slightly better as it means that there will be no chance of running up a huge bill by mistake.

The major problem with using a local SIM is that the research suggests people DO use their phone for making and receiving calls/texts.

It's not really possible to do that affordably if you use a local SIM.

There's no specified limit, but they do say on the blog comments:

"You can access applications like Spotify and YouTube for streaming but it’s restricted"

"I’m afraid Skype is not included in this pass"

They don't elaborate on what "restricted" means. I don't know if they are saying that Skype is blocked, or just that it might not work.

They might be just covering themselves regarding for things like the iplayer - not available outside uk for streaming etc.

I'd actually expect it to work.

The data is usually routed back to the UK network, so often looks like you're in the UK.

People wouldn't normally try though, due to the extreme costs involved.

I don't like that it expires at midnight UK time.
A 24 hour period from activation would be fairer.

I have many PAYG sims and three contract sims - Orange, O2 and Talk Mobile so I was interested to see which was the best value data deal. I decided we go to France in July I am going to use the O2 contract sim (also on PAYG as well) which will allow 25mb of data a day for £1.99. I will be able to tether all our devices and this amount will be fine as all we will do is check emails and some light surfing. It is supposed to be a holiday after all so maybe a bit less time playing with phones and tablets is required.

You just know that's going to confuse a whole bunch of people who don't really understand time zones. The type of people who ring you in the middle of the night to tell you what an awesome time they're having!

Haha, I'm guilty of that. Atleast with Europe time zones, its not quite as bad.

I spent at least an hour explaining and demonstrating with comparison clocks with the office assistant one year. I thought she understood. Two days into my holiday in L.A. I got a phone call from her at 3.15am local time!
