Yes it will likely be possible, but you need to provide the phone / operating system if you want "howto".

If it's android for example

installing dropbox would be my prefered method for the photos, as this will scan the phone for them, upload them to the web and down load them to any PC you install dropbox on using the same account. This will run in the background so any new photos you take will also go up. You can limit it to only uploading when you have a wifi connection if you are worried about your data usage

there are dozens of SMS backup utilities on play, SMS Backup by Christoph Studer for instance copies all your text messages to your gmail account as if they were emails and can set the read/unread indicator, apply a label so you can distinguish texts from other mails, it can be run once - or sit in the background and trigger when any new mails arrive.

Yes install sms backup+ this will allow you to backup texts and then install it on your new phone and restore your texts. Assuming your new phone is also Android

The SMS app I Mentioned is: SMS Backup

http://code.google.com/p/android-sms/wiki/UserGuide

It will mean even if your new phone isn't android, you can still access your texts as they will be in your gmail folders

Then for your photos if you need it

That a bit vague, do you mean that
  • You've never been able to sync your phone to gmail
  • You used to sync the phone, but now it doesn't
  • You've installed SMS backup - when you press Backup now it gives you the error message

If it's the last one, and assuming you have a connection, the only thing I can think of is that you've got a typo in (or haven't yet entered) the password or account name in the settings...

start the app and check that it is showing your gmail email address as the account, then press the password line and re-enter your password
