I know Windows XP can only run up to IE8, and I'm guessing that previous versions to that can't even run IE7, except maybe Windows 2000?

I wouldn't shop with a company that dictated what browser I can or cannot use. I don't use IE on any of my computers at home or work, but I hate websites that just snobbishly discriminate against IE in favour of Firefox, Chrome etc. with nag screens that tell us we should use a "better" browser.
The trouble is that IE has a history of doing its own thing when it comes to rendering websites. IE6 was a nightmare, IE7 is better, and IE8 is just about there. So its not out of snobbishness for the latest version, its because it can be a PITA coding websites with conditional CSS for IE.

Like I said it came across to me as that was what you were saying - you had said if they don't then they would lose customers which comes across to me as you saying the the company should support them.

I'm surprised many people still use IE. I reckon IE isn't a browser, it's what you use to get a proper browser I'm (unfortunately) the personal helpdesk to a few of our friends and they were all surfing using IE. One was using AOL on a laptop running Vista on 1GB RAM - ouch! I tried to get her to use Firefox and I even installed it for her. I don't know if she uses it though. I also had to remove Norton Internet Security for her.

Well the people I know who use it aren't exactly the most knowledgeable of users and are probably using it only because they don't know any different. What I should have said is that I'm surprised anyone who knows of the alternatives is still using it.

I don't know much about computers and am running IE9.

I went onto YouTube yesterday and had a message that it thought I was running IE7 and wanted me to upgrade.

I use Yahoo for mail, and it still asks me to upgrade to IE9.

Surely there isn't anything I need to do to tell the websites what version of IE I am running?

I suppose some people will actually genuninely like IE and use it by choice...it's like Mac, some people use them even when they no Windows 7 based PCs are available

Good point, I know older versions of IE tended to do whatever they liked while other browsers were much better with standards compliance. But modern versions are much better and shouldn't give website designers anything like the problems older ones do.

Which is why I find it a bit strange that this website listed all the main browsers (Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Safari), but not IE 8, to use as alternatives.
