Microsoft Home and Student 2010

I know this may sound like a really dumb question but i purchased this package for a ECDL course i'm doing only to realise Access and Outlook are not on it. . Instead of returning the package and buying Access and Outlook separately will this affect the package i have or not. I know this sounds silly but i am just very unsure about this. And would really appreciate help thank you.

Firstly, if you opened it, you can't return it (not sure if you did this or not yet).

Secondly, it's almost always cheaper to purchase the office product containing all the apps you want than to buy them seperately later. There's nothing to stop you adding the other applications seperately though (barring funding issues).

These from Microsoft UK store
http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/bu...nGB_Office_Buy
and it's quite clear what each version contains
Access separately
http://emea.microsoftstore.com/UK/en...ft/Access-2010
Outlook
http://emea.microsoftstore.com/UK/en...t/Outlook-2010

Shop around for cheaper (maybe OEM) prices

To be honest I wouldnt bother buying Access or Outlook just for the ECDL. The module that covers outlook is pretty generic and could be replicated with almost any other email client. The Access bit is more in depth but is one of those things you will probably never use again. Given the cost I would say your better off just using a library PC or going to an internet cafe or something for this part.

I don't know why people purchase Office Home and Student when the full Office Professional package is available at student software sites for under £50. I think I paid £39,99 for Office Pro and that includes all packages except Visio

They're probably misled by the titles - "Home and Student" vs. "Professional."

However, it's also odd that people don't check what's included before ordering.

I do have to laugh when you go to places like PC World or Comet and they make out they are doing you a favour by selling the cut down version of Office known as Home and Student for around £60-65 to people who don't have the knowledge to know better.

As posted previously I obtained the full PROFESSIONAL version of MS Office for £39.99 (the price has now risen to £69.95 since my purchase some nine months ago ) from the Software4students website - an absolute bargain in my opinion

The difference being that the Pro Plus copy on Software4Students is licensed for schoolchildren, students or education staff, wheras the retail boxes are available to anyone. It was because of the lax checks and the subsequent abuse that the price was racked up by almost double. MS were originally planning on pulling the plug on the scheme altogether and substituting it with the "Academic" retail box, but thankfully seemed to have backtracked on that idea since it was brought to their attention by the school network technicians that the replacement product doesn't include all the components used on the curriculum.

I was in PC World the other morning and I noticed they were selling Norton Internet Security with several of their laptops. I think it was an extra €50 or something. I said to the person I was with that they'd have to pay me to use that software

Thanks for all the help i checked with the course and it seems to be ok. I will probably have to buy Access at some stage which will not be cheap on the microsoft site its €189 a bit stiff it seems cheaper on amazon may check PC world. I did'nt open the packaging as silly as i was to purchase without checking i thought better than opening it. I do not know about these student discounted sites and as they are probably in sterling it may still work out to expensive. I checked with Microsoft for the full package and it was nearly €500. I used to laugh at people on amazon who would buy american DVD's without checking the region silly how it slaps you in the face.
