Scarface or The Godfather: Which is better?

Both are fantastic in my opinion but I give the edge to Scarface. I loved the Tony Montana character and thought Pacino was at his very best in it

You?

Love both films but have to give it to the Godfather closely followed by Part 2 then Scarface.

Godfather Part II along with Terminator II are my all time favourite sequels. Usually they aren't anywhere near as good as what came before them, but those two IMO, were fantastic.

Neither for me. I've always thought both were massively overrated.

One isn't slightly better than the other though?

I'm sorry, I don't like them enough to call it either way. I know that isn't the popular view but what can I do.

Both fantastic films IMO.

You have The Godfather, a thinking mans film or Scarface with it's trendy 80's spin on organised crime and living to excess.

I adore both films for all kinds of reasons BUT Scarface edges it for me. It's the whole 80's, coke snorting, excessive lifestyle thing I love about it.

Godfather for me, damn near as perfect a movie as you can get.

I mean, Scarface? That accent for a start... I spent 75% of the movie laughing.

Godfarther for me.
I don't see what all the fuss is about for Scarface. They should have done an Al Capone story, instead of trying to set in 1980s Florida. Maybe after seeing the Wire, it just looks unrealistic and silly.

Godfather. By some distance.

Scarface is vastly over-rated, and pretty much ruined Pacino as an actor. His scenery chewing was epic.

Godfather for me. Perhaps a case could be made for Pacino's overblown acting being in line with Tony Montana's overblown coke-addled brain - except he does it in practically every other film too!

I think the first two Godfather films are superior to Scarface in every conceivable way. I struggle to even include them in the same sentence, there's such a difference in quality.

Well the original was loosely based on Al Capone: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarface_(1932_film)

Not many people realise that Scarface with Al Pacino is actually a remake-of-sorts.

For me The Godfather is completely gripping, excellent performances from everyone and is just about perfect

Scarface is good but I find it kind of boring, Al Pacino is pretty entertaining, though his performance in The Godfather is his best of all time

The Godfather Parts I and II are great films of their day. There some fantastic performances by various actors Brando, Pacino, De Niro, Keating and Duvall. You also get a sense of varous themes immigrancy in New York, the institution of the family and it's values, crime and power. All of which interweave themselves into one of the greatest cinematic sagas of all time.

Godfather by a clear mile. Scarface is overated. However personaly I think Goodfellas or Casino is better than both of them.

The Godfather is undoubtedly the better film, but personally I prefer Scarface as I find all the Godfather movies tedious.

Godfather by a mile.

Scarface has 3 things i remember well, the ugliness of the sister, the lack of boobs on Michelle Pfeiffer and the shootout at the end.

Tough call. With regards to straightforward film-making, Godfather edges it.

But with other aspects taken into consideration, a case could be mounted for Scarface's superiority.
