should the simpsons be cancelled?

with the simpsons going into its 24th season this year has the show overdone its course back in the 90s and early 2000 it was a big thing but slowly the hype has gone and now it just seems stale

i say bring it back for one more short season and concentrate on bringing out 12 amazing episodes with an unforgettable finale before its cancelled with no goodbye episode

It still gets fairly good ratings, it's unlikely to go anywhere for a while. Nobody cares about critical reception otherwise 2 Broke Girls wouldn't have made it past it's first season.

I consider it beyond conventional means of cancellation. There is too much invested in it e.g merchandise, international broadcasting etc.

I wouldn't, it's a worldwide cash cow. You'd be an idiot to cancel it.

It shouldn't be cancelled because despite its appalling ratings, it still rakes in the cash.

However, its contract is up for renewal after season 25 I think, and I suspect it will be the last season. I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but Marge's voice has really changed over the last few years and I vaguely recall Julie Kavner saying she finds it really difficult to do nowadays and they've essentially removed Patty and Selma from the cast for the same reason as she does all three.

It'll be things like that which end the show rather than just it's reduced quality.

but is that the only thing that matters cash? many other shows have ended cause they wanted to end before viewers got bored theres no point milking it let it end on a good note

I think FOX might be starting to worry about the ratings.

This year FOX's animation domination went very low,
and Family Guy had its lowest viewed season yet...but it was also the first year Family Guy started to beat Family Guy in the ratings.

So consider that Family Guy had its lowest rated season but still managed to beat The Simpsons for the first time....they must be worried

What annoys me is how everyone harps on and on about how its the longest running cartoon because it started in 1989 yet people have a bad case of amnesia and forget TMNT started in 1987 2 years earlier.

granted the Turtles cartoon wasent on yearly but their new series starts in 2013 and a film too so it outranks them in terms of a longer cartoon.

It's the longest running cartoon which has consistantly been on each year. Otherwise things like Scooby Doo, which still has new episodes, would be considered to have run longer. And The Flintstones is coming back too.

I'm sure they will when the time comes. I think it's unlikely they would abruptly cancel it without a resoultion.

Apparently though if it did end Fox could make around $750m in syndication rights: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...Top+Stories%29

It's not just ratings or quality. It's extra revenue. The merchendise, the DVDs etc. Have to work bloody hard to get an asset like the Simpsons that can shill stuff so easily as they can. You don't dump Mickey Mouse because the cartoons aren't any longer that interesting to people.

They probably should, but I doubt they will. Like it has been said, it's a great method of making money due to merchandising. I used to think the new episodes were viewed in too harsh a light a few years back, but now the newer episodes truly are woeful.

There will be a point where producing new episodes and paying huge salaries is pointless when they can air reruns (508 episodes to date) for decades to come and keep the brand relevant.

They can also keep relevant with movies, straight to DVD releases and Treehouse of Horror specials. I think this season had some of the lowest rated episodes ever (just over 4 million viewers). But it's still one of the most expensive shows to advertise on.

I think it's got at least another 5 years in it to be honest before it goes to reruns.

I watched a fairly recent episode the other day where Selma married Fat Tony and featured quite prominently.

As the OPs notes, merchandise brings in lots of money for FOX, so even though "The Simpsons" is doing poorly in the
ratings, (only 4.79 million watched the Lady Gaga
episode less than "Family Guy"
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/201...les-up/135161/ )
this will keep probably the show going, unless one of the
lead actors decides to quit the show.

I just found this piece of info- a short, dialogue-free Simpson film featuring Maggie will
be released:

Quote:
Simpsons fans who have been awaiting the show’s return to the big screen, you may now let out a short, silent “Woo Hoo!”: A four-and-a-half-minute dialogue-free film, titled The Longest Daycare, will be shown before Ice Age: Continental Drift when that movie hits theaters on July 13.

A glimpse into the show's future?

Family Guy is the best positioned scripted show on Fox and The Simpsons was 4th according to TV By The Numbers. Given that the Cleveland Show (Fox's 4th worst) got renewed, I doubt they'll be going anywhere any time soon (at least not for ratings reasons)/

Short answer: No. I still enjoy it, it's improved ALOT in the last couple of years and still gets fairly good ratings. Also, I doubt Fox would cancel one of their biggest shows, so it would be down to Matt Groening at the end of the day, and he has no desire to end the show yet.

No. I think the Simpsons will probably be still around in five years time.

I don't think The Simpsons will go away anytime soon. But Seth Mcfarlene said he could stop doing Family guy in a recent interview because he does not want the show to go on as long.Till his show becomes stale and people get bored of Peter, but if anyone asks me what the best show is I would say Family guy more funny less serious and bland. The Simpsons had it day in 1997 people started too get bored of it going in too thing trying too renew it every time but get lost with time and they are abit overrated than any other cartoon. And I think that why Seth Mcfarlene does not wan't his show too go on for so,long because it would just get bland a stale. As for American dad it run it course there were people talking about Fox axing it but there been no word on that matter now maybe they signed a deal to make more episodes but who knows.
