Never had a problem with updates when wanting to do something else - i have it set so they download in the background and then install when I turn my PC off.

Its as simple as "download updates, but let me choose to install them".

Yep, if you find updates annoying or simply want to control when they get downloaded/installed, change the default option.

Hang on, doesn't Windows 7 usually give you the option to postpone the restart for 4 hours or more?

calm now

Think the problem is the game uses a lot of resourses and combine this with windows downloading (its pinching my bandwith) and also hard drive doing lots of read\write even if just downloading.
All combined to affect my ping rate and gave me a stutter just when i was moving in for the kill, means i die
Only bothers me when wanting play a game as soon as i switch on, internet browsing and office etc updates dont affect it.

It did seem to do a big download that updated the registry stuff, combine that with only using Win7 for game and office, and MSE wanting to do its stuff etc as Win7 hasnt been on for a week or so.

That soon flies round when engrossed in game, so rather get restart out the way.

Suppose its a XBox for xmas this year, and\or upgrade to Fibre or I7 Processor or SSD or all if i win the lottery

Just no patience, expect things to just it, is that just me or society in general?

That's what I do. Always set it to notify me first before it interrupts my game of PES.

But wouldnt that still involve pinching some of my broadband, as its still downloading whilst im online?
Also its still carrying out read\write operations to my hard drive as its got to put the download somewhere, even if it isnt installing it yet?

A brand new PC wont help with any of that. Its your broadband that is the problem, or maybe wifi interference.

Edit: FTTC will help actually, but depending on the deal you get shouldn't cost more.

Or, you could choose:

"Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"
it's either that or
"Never check for updates (not recommended)"

Dont use wifi for anything, as you say its probably time for a look at broadband deals.

The only problem with that is if i decide not to download install updates when PC is turned on, and i put it off till next time. It just makes the process bigger and longer when i finally do decide to do it.

Does anyone know if Windows Updates only get downloaded when you are not doing anything else online? I can't say I have ever noticed my broadband being slow when downloads are coming down and I have a 1.5MB broadband so thought I would have noticed.

I would recommend that you turn your computer on the second Tuesday of each month, and check for and install Windows updates. Windows call this day 'Patch Tuesday'.

This will make sure that you are not prompted by updates installing when you want to use you PC.

So you decide to do it when you don't urgently need the computer for something else.

Generally, updates will be checked and downloaded when you first turn the computer on, regardless of what you are currently doing online. If there are only a handful of updates and all you are doing is browsing websites, then it's quite likely that you won't notice any slowdown. But now that you're aware of it, you probably will...
