EDIT: You can skip to 7:50 for the aliens bit, but I'd recommend watching the whole thing if you've got a spare 15 mins.

(lol @ dey duk der deeeerrrrbbbbs)

I watched it all and really enjoyed it. Can't argue with that . Well, I expect people could but I'm not going to as I agreed with everything . What an interesting bloke.

Thanks for that

Yeah, I can see two slightly different core motivations for visiting us. Curiosity. Or eliminating any potential competition on the galactic scene.

Of course they wouldn't even have to nuke us, just send down some rocks at a fair speed. Having traveled here, they probably know how to make objects go quite fast.

I very strongly doubt it, but I'd frickin luv it if it did happen - even if it's just signals or basic audio/video somehow. Imagine the breaking news headlines! It would be very exciting an would change the world.

Aliens will be nothing like humans.

They wont look like us, talk like us or even breed like us so please dont think that aliens will all look like that cute creature ET.

An alien could be microscopic, just like an airborn virus, and they wont be travelling to earth on any spaceships but they could still have the capacity to wipe out the entire human race.

Or, on some planet(s), they could be exactly like humans! We will never know, frustratingly.

No, you're attempting to rule out something that you have less than minuscule knowledge about.

I say yes but not without a lot of resistance. Whether people know it or not and i firmly believe most religious people have never even read their own holy books, Christians for instance i think most have never even came in contact with a Bible before but if you look at what they all teach.....the very idea of life elsewhere in the Universe makes those books redundant. They talk about the world being created, man being made, the second you bring in an outside source all of a sudden you realise that this isn't how it's done. There is obviously more to life and how we were created and how we came to be here. Lots of things that we need answers too. Most people live in a bubble, an illusion of what they think life is. The reason it will never happen most likely is because it will be the greatest thing to happen in human history, why? Because it will be the STORY of human history.

Haha, no. That's my point - even the most informed scientist on space and the universe probably has less than a billionth of a percent of knowledge about what he studies. When you look at it in that context, you'll see how arrogant and outrageous your statement is. You may be right, but it would be down to an incredibly lucky, ill-informed guess rather than anything intellectual.

Me too. Very interesting.

I believe in Alien life purely on a statistical basis and that's just within our own galaxy not to mention the billions more outside of ours.

For the hardened believer they should check out Alex Collier who claims to have in depth knowledge of what's out there. Steer clear of David Icke though even though they have both made a good career out of it.

Contact was made decades ago.
It will be made public knowledge one day, until then we are largely kept in ignorance.

They might not even think like us. It's a concept that a few SF writers have explored. People assume that given a dictionary we can converse with aliens but that might not be the case.

In my own mind, as I am religious, I feel, in some deep way, we are totally alone in the universe. There is no one else. zero. Is like a sign. Like being on the third planet is a sign, an earth size symbol of Trinity.

In my other secular mind, I feel, alien messages are just around the corner - a decade or two at most.....

And then, in my dark moments, I feel that we are all living in some super advance computer game - we're not real. The whole universe is virtual. I think I read in the New Scientist once that if it was possible to create a virtual universe then 99.9999% of all universes would be virtual , therefore it would be a 99.99999% certainty that we're in one and that we're just part of a game.

those are the three options as I see it. Do you have more options? Views? Opinions?
I didn't know anyone actually believed the third one.

Interesting subject, I wander how many on the fuel it would take to get here theory gang feels the fuel or time to get here theory would auto make it impossable?.

Just because we dont know of or possably cant imagine an unknown or physical form of energy to "move" an object that does not come in "fuel" or "volume" form it does not of cause mean it cant ever, never or currently does not exist.

To suggest that fuel has to come in the form of a liquid or a huge volumetric form making prolonged space travel impossable is like saying solar energy cells was not possable 100 years ago. Yet while thats a phyisical form that uses a non physical energy to produce energy it does not mean a fraction in size of solar energy cell technology producing thousands of times more energy per square cm or physical object using currently unknown or currently unviable sources of energy coverted to other forms of energy is not and wont ever be possable in the future.

Physics is an ever changing science. When you look at what has been known, found out and been made possable in the last 100 years, just for a minute try to imagine what might be found out and made possable new science wise in the next 100 years or so.

In my lifetime prehaps, but there will always be those in power having the resorces and agenda to ensure we will never find out or possably discredit any genuine proof in the name of ensuring we dont panic etc "for our own good"..

planet earth is already in contact with aliens

who says we have to find them

they already found US long, long ago..... and that is the truth

evidence of UFOs dates all the way back to the ancient egyptians, look at this picture: http://www.alien-ufo-pictures.com/akhnatonbabies.jpg

,
I would dispute that. Just because there are lots of variables doesn't mean something can only happen once...if it can happen here there is no reason it can't happen anywhere else.

The variables aren;t beyond comprehension I would say you are coming from a stance of personal incredulity there.

The Drake Equation is an interesting thing to look at.

I do agree with your distances comment though.

I posted yesterday on another thread about alien life (conspiracy thread).

Also, define 'make contact' it's not too far out that we might get messages sent out by a race elsewhere in the galaxy...probably long dead by now...just like in a few 100000years some galaxy might pick up signals from Earth...let's hope they don't tune into ITV...

Oh and I've been having a bit of a Degrasse Tyson binge recently. Well worth watching some of his other stuff on youtube:

with

Dawkins
Stephen Colbert(out of character)
And this...just brilliant the 90minutes will fly by. If you have any interest at all in sceince, rational thought and (un)common sense then you will love this...and if you don't...watch it anyway and even if you don't agree at least you will have had someone give a clear response to all these things.

Almost certainly impossible as there are just too many variables meaning the chance of being like human must be almost zero.

We exist, as humans, because of our (now) atmosphere, gravity, oceans, evolution over several billion years (each evolutionary step being absolutely necessary and it would be impossible to replicate), minerals on this planet (as part of our make-up), climate (for humans, not too hot, not too cold). etc etc. Everything is interlinked and has been since the formation of single-celled organisms.

Any other sentient life form would have developed under different conditions and would have evolved to suit the conditions in their planetary home. Does not mean I do not b elieve there is not sentient life out there (as I think there is) but I cannot see how it could resemble human life in any way and indeed may be totally outside our present comprehension or in uderstanding
