If who you are talking to has the same software installed on their computer then something like Skype does a good job for audio or video calls for free.

If you want to make calls to phones then LocalPhone has a softphone application. Rates are pretty good too.

i just started to use sipgate, but with a adaptor, they do have a softphone and a Android app.

The quality seems ok and it is free, you pay per call.

what they are like long term i don't know, but in a few weeks time it will be my only means of a home phone.

I found skype to be a bandwidth hogger  as i was with them for about 3 mouths but then switched to sipgate because i could get my own telephone number and use that for gumtree / ads in the paper

BT Homehub 2 = £1.52 on ebay
USB pen drive = 2.79 for a 2GB on ebay aswell
get it all for less then a £5 for a voip gateway

The misses like it as her mum and sister are takers
The only downside to it, I had a strange phone call from someone in australia said...Hello.. Can i talk to you... I said who is it... Said i dialed a sipgates user id... Im like right ok what you selling to me?

iPad's aswell mate

Looks cheap mate, Do they offer a landline number?
