Passwords

I have so many different things to use passwords for and I was advised not to use the same one for everything. Now, I'm getting on a bit and so the memory isn't what it once was so I forget all my different passwords!
How do you remember yours? Do you have a system?
Without giving away state secrets, do you have any tips?

I use LastPass then I only have to remember 1 password All my other passwords are generated via LastPass and are random so I could never remember any of them but at least they are unique ans strong

Perhaps the basic same one, but with the addition of something relevant to the specific site on the end? passwordds, password fb etc?

Also substituting numbers for letters, pa55w0rdds, pa55w0rdfb etc.?

I've never heard of this. How does it help you remember all your different passwords?

Use Google Chrome, then add Click & Clean and Form box extensions.
C&C has a password generator and you c&p it into form box.
Job done.

ETA. If you're using FF then use InFormEnter + C&C.

It doesn't help you. It stores all your passwords in its database so when you revisit a site with a login, it automatically fills in your username and password in the textboxes... it can even log you in automatically.

Ah, that's a good idea, the first one! I tend to go for bands or songs I like, but then I forget which ones I used in the different places.

Another vote for LastPass.

You don't need to remember any passwords, LastPass will create a super-secure one for you. You never need to know it as LastPass fills it all in for you. The only password you need to remember is the one that gets you into your LastPass "vault".

Have a look at their website, they have some excellent videos explaining how it all works

I know that sites probably legit, but I can't help get a little paranoid that all is not what it seems

Yep - because it stores your password on its own 'cloud' servers it can work from any computer as long as you remember the master password

But is it very secure to allow a database to know all of your passwords? Not sure I'd be entirely at ease with that.

You're right to be paranoid... especially about allowing an application to manage your passwords... but it is a legit, well known business. Do a bit of research to confirm it for yourself.

Thanks, I will do that but I wanted to know if anyone had their own systems, not a computer generated one.

Without giving too much away does anyone have any other ways of remembering theirs?

I thought that was a good idea, except I used it to generate the password for my proxy server at work. Of course, when I needed to access lastpass.com and needed my password, I couldn't get at it!
Stoopid system!

The business would need to be secure to make any money.. any security flaw exposed would risk it going out of business...

I've never heard of anyone having their passwords leaked due to the business... But I can understand why you'd be uncomfortable with it. All I can say is that I've never had an account or login hacked during my time using it.

Businesses can be legit today and dodgy tomorrow. Also, single points of failure like that (and others, like Zscaler) are prime targets for hackers.

Your profile says you're only 31. If your memory is failing at such an early stage in life, then I suggest you plan a trip to your doctors.

Do what a lot of people at work do and write them all down on a Post-it and stick it to the screen.

That would be alright if you didn't need some secure passwords.
