iOS 6 - My first impressions.

First a minor rant:

Since I updated to iOS 6, the Enable 3G switch has disappeared again. When I first got the 4S last year the switch was there for half an hour then a profile (carrier settings) was pushed onto my phone from the network then it disappeared. And so it remained, until a couple more software updates then it thankfully returned.

I find it handy to leave the phone on 2G when I'm not using it as it conserves battery life, and it stops the phone constantly looking for a 3G signal.

I presume the option isn't hidden somewhere and I'm just not seeing it. Has anyone else on iOS 6 got the same issue?

Other then that, I'm finding iOS 6 fairly stable for a first beta, as compared to other early betas of previous versions. I think I'm going to stick with it for now.

A few third party apps shutdown unexpectedly, but they need updating I guess. Even a few Apple apps such as ITunes U don't support iOS 6 yet. This is to be expected at this stage so no big deal, as the stuff I mainly need all the time is working fine. Also safari seems to work much faster, and I like the full screen mode.

The location data from Yelp seems very incomplete. It cannot accurately find my nearest ATM etc. Also no proper 3D mapping (with terrains and buildings) yet for the UK, but it's early days I suppose. I tried using it in the car to navigate, it seems to work OK, but it definitely needs more work. The maps do look a bit spartan as compared to Google Maps. I miss the street view too.

However Siri has become a lot more useful now it can access apps and change system settings. Something that was sadly lacking before.

I still haven't worked out what to do with Passbook. Perhaps that will make more sense later, with RFID?

I'm really aiming this thread at sharing experiences with others who have tried/are using iOS 6, and not the usual fanboy pissing contest

From what little I know about it, there's not much you can do with it unless you use it with 3rd party services that support it. then the gig/theatre/cinema/train ticket gets stored in the Passbook. No?

That's the idea, but as yet nothing seems to support it. I have a feeling in future it will also manage micro payments etc. then it could be more useful.

Yes, the 3G slider has gone. Not to say it may come back.
They may not have it there as it may have to be a 3G & 4G slider
If it was included someone may find it in the code even in the 4S firmware.

It's quite snappy, browsing is so much faster.. Faster than I've seen on any phone. Loving the new share menus, works well.

iOS 6 isn't out yet.

Are you talking about the developer version?

Yes. You can get it as a registered developer, or a registered developer can assign a 100 extra devices to use. Some sell on their quota for few quid each. This way Apple's servers will authorise the beta software on your device. It will continue to work for all the subsequent beta updates until iOS 6 goes public.

No noticeable change that I can see, with Blue used for iMessages, and green for standard SMS.

Cheers. I don't use iMessage as it eats into my data allowance and I have unlimited texts.

Your own text message tone?

Can you? I thought it was only ringtones.

Do they have to be a certain length or can they be a second long?

They can be short or long like ring tones. But you wouldn't want something too long for a text message tone. With iOS 6 you can additionally, set anything you like for Alarms, New Mail, New Voicemail etc. etc. Not a big feature, and something most other phones have had for years.

there is even a specific txt tone section in the itunes store for you to purchase new ones.

but you can easily make your own, have been able to do it since iOS3 IIRC.

Ok, well, just installed iOS6.

Will give it a test run over the next few days to see what like.

You can install it without that UDID nonsense or whatever its called.

no you can't.
you need your UDID registered on the developer portal.

everyone also needs to bear in mind that this is beta 1, and there will be many betas right up until October.

people should expect things to not work properly and/or have issues.

if you read the rest of the thread it says it's "hit and miss", and i fully expect that you will end up with a blocked iphone once apple catch on that it is happening.

trust me, as someone with a developer account, if your iphone's UDID is not on the list, you will eventually get blocked.

I highly doubt they will block the entire phone!

Anyway, i dont intend to use it for long. Just a quick look round but so far im not overly impresssed by it.

If there is a workaround for activating the beta, I fully expect Apple will close the loophole in beta 2

Nice to see another thread appear to discuss the beta/upcoming release. Just hope the fanboys find somewhere else to compare the size of their penises

yes they will. you will boot your iphone and it will say you are not authorised to use this build.

you would then need to put your iphone into DFU mode and restore it back to an iOS5.x build.

also, beware that sometimes once you install a beta, you can't revert back to a previous version. this is why beta's are for developers only.

i downloaded it earlier today (with out being a developer).

The maps looked quick but not as clear.
I liked the new sharing menu.
Like the sound of the cloud tabs.

But I was not able to install it while keeping my app data. Am I doing something wrong or is this all part of the Beta and/or not being a developer.(so had to revert to IOS5.1.1)
A number of my friends are (sad? like me) and none of us are computer experts, would we we able to 'club together' to get a developer account, so we could get ios6 early.

I managed to keep all my app data and everything. After the update if offered to restore my data, it took ages but it worked fine.

It's not worth paying for a dev account. It's $99/year. Loads of places out there will register your UDID with a dev who sell off their device allocations for just a few quid each (about $7). Apple have turned a blind eye to the practice, as it seems to fuel interest.
