Gold and swearing
Just been watching a One foot in the Grave Christmas special and the word 'horse sh*t' was used this afternoon.
Not good baring in mind some more minor wordsdiet edited out of shows. |

They still edit out the phrase "Well, let's get out there and tw*t it" from Red Dwarf repeats, but in the context it means to hit something, not some sexual reference, but they don't care. It gets cut along with any other swearing we had in series 3. It only seems to happen for series 3 though...
I hate censorship and think it would be much better if it was up to people to decide for themselves what they wanted to see or hear and not have some other person decide for us. I'm glad they broadcast the show with the 'horse shit' still intact. I also hope they got no complaints so that they won't think about editing further episodes of any shows. |

I have been a bit suprised at the language I've heard used during the daytime on UK Gold over the past few months, but on the other hand, none of it (including "horse shit" in this context) wouldn't pass as a PG on a DVD release (the Mother Nature's Son episode of Only Fools and Horses has the same words in it, and the DVD is only a PG), and plenty of 12 rated material goes out uncut during the daytime, so presumably its OK to show it pre-watershed?

Shit, piss, bastard, bitch, whore, slut and a few other mild words are all fine at PG according to the BBFC. I wonder why Ofcom have a problem with them then, surely there should be some collaboration between them so there are clear guidelines as to what can be shown and when. I was going to record Sister Act last night in HD off Channel 4 but noticed it was on at 7pm and Channel 4 have lost their balls of late and have to edit their films so as not to offend, heaven forbid!

To save kids hearing any of these swear words ever, we'd have to ban them from the playground!

Besides, Channel 4 generally only cut 12s. There's been some suggestions that district 9 was cut, but nobody's been able to confirm that and the left 'the c word' uncut so I'd assume it wasn't |

Grease has always been considered a strong PG, but that's more for sexual content and language. Still is acceptable at PG, it's just that there are few fewer films released as PG now - the advent of the 12A/12 means that companies are much more inclined to stick in a few stronger moments as the early teens market are put off by U and PG certs. As for Channel 4 and its various other channels - yes, they once did have a policy of never cutting films, and I've yet to see any evidence that they do after 9pm, but they're now much more inclined to edit films for earlier, pre-watershed timeslots. Shame. |

I know that's not true for a start, I can think of several other PG films and TV shows that have shit in them. The aformentioned Only Fools and Horses episode I mentioned above (and another from Series 5, and another from Series 7), and Robin Hood: Men In Tights is another. And Mrs Doubtfire. And Back To The Future (more than once in that film). And Home Alone. And there's plenty of others if I could be bothered to actually think about it.

Exactly or alternatively ban them from anywhere where there are adults. Walk round any city or town or council estate and one can hear swear words mentioned all the times in many cases actually in front of their own children.

Most of those were before the 12 was introduced and have been kept there for historical reasons. I not seen (and none of you have listed) one PG film from the past 10 years that has included the word shit. I'm assuming that's more due to introduction of the 12 and the desire to make all children's films also appear to the teenage market. (Whose idea was it to make sure Transformers was aimed at teenagers? because adding a load of mildly racist/sex jokes didn't do anything to improve the film and without them (and a few less uses of the word 'shit') they could've probably pushed a PG) |

I've heard all of those words uncut prewatershed, the only one that ever gets cut is shit. The less offensive crap is always left in, and so is the equally offensive but slightly more personal bastard, but shit is always deemed more offensive for some reason

I caught an episode of Gavin and Stacey on Gold yesterday wondering how it'd go out with it being at lunchtime. "Sh*t a brick" was still in tact. I couldn't care less about hearing such words before the watershed, but you'd think UKTV would make more of an effort to avoid a telling off from Ofcom, especially with a show like that. They'll be showing Bottom at 3pm next.

I saw an afternoon episode on GOLD a few months back which contained a scene of Rodney reading a porn mag. I was pretty surprised that it wasn't cut as it clearly showed topless women.

Quite amazed that people make a fuss about these words and use children as a reason. As already pointed out children from 5 upwards use such words on the playground. They learn them from other kids or their parents - not TV!

If parents have young children do they ever go to beaches abroad where topless women are the norm. Many years ago now, I took my son, he was ten at the time, to Ibiza there were women with bare breasts everywhere, on the beach, by the pool. It did not affect him in the slightest, he didn't even comment about it |

i will be honest though Im reminded of the butchering of the Batman film when the word FUNSTER was used in lieu of something else. Slightly off topic did anyone else see the Victoria Wood as seen on tv stack on gold over the weekend, The SAME SHOW was shown twice .the second one directly after the first and nobody noticed . ![]() It so makes me wish for the return of the announcer who actually watched the programmes as they went out rather than the pre recorded paragraphs that get slotted in over the end credits.the one that really winds me up is the "Next on Gold the adventures of the old codgers in Last Of The Summer Wine" or similar ... announced over the end of....Last Of The Summer Wine. .

While these words may be heard in the playground, they should not be heard in the class room, because they are not appropriate. The words (tend to be) not appropriate pre watershed when children could be watching the TV (IMO).
I believe there should be some degree of regulation, and I think ofcom do a fantastic job. |

Someone mentioned the word 'tw*t' above. That was rated as a PG on a Vic Reeves Big Night Out video, and that word was shouted through a megaphone.
One of the stupidest bits of censorship, on the radio, Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus. As well as scratching out 'dick' and 'ass', it does the same for the word 'gun'. WTF*? (*F = Fiddle-de-dee) |

In fact, the version I've seen on the music channels doesn't even cut out dick and ass, only gun.

Given what's available on the internet to kids these days I couldn't care less what they put on tv. They could have Ron Jeremy presenting Blue Peter for all I care
