Ethernet splitters, one for sky and one for TV
Hey guys, I'm planning on getting a new TV and it has an ethernet port for things like youtube etc.. And my Sky+HD box has one for Anytime+. Now I can't run two 15metre ethernet cables so could I run one, and then use this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-PORT-RJ4...ht_1204wt_1270 to split the signal and have another short ethernet cable to the tv and the other to the sky+hd box?? Thanks for your help.

No.
You cannot split one ethernet connection into two. Neither connection will work. There are connectors that can feed two ethernet connections down one lead and split them out into two separate connections again. They work because 100Mb/s ethernet uses two pairs of wires and there are four pairs in an ethernet cable. So these special connectors make use of the unused pairs to send the second feed down the cable. They are known as port doublers. Most I have seen and used are designed for structured cabling run through buildings so are designed to plug into patch panels at the router/switch end and a wall socket at the other end. So most resemble this http://www.amazon.co.uk/LINDY-Double.../dp/B000I2JVRI To use them with a cable you would need a back to back socket coupler. You need two, one at each end of the cable. eg http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...AB2EPY2HHGSD5W You plug two router LAN ports into the two sockets on one end and then the TV and Sky box into the two ports at the other end. The plug on the end of the short lead needs to be connected to the link cable, it does not plug into an ether net port on either the router or the TV/Sky box. |

I use one of these, I have 3 devices connected to it,
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...ls_o01_s00_i00 Then one lead from that is connected to this which gives me a wireless connection to my router. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...ls_o03_s00_i00 In a nutshell my Sony tv, Sky+ HD box & my Philips Freeview HD recorder all connect wirelessly to my router & access the internet with no issues. |
