The realtors (estate agents) do their pictures on the ipad and its uploaded to the web as they write the description of the house. So they can visit a potential seller and put the house on the market in one simple visit, no returning to the office to upload photographs or prepare documents etc.

I know a lot of people use the iPad camera to take pictures of written notes and such to keep as a backup. Probably the most useful thing for people who write a lot.

I write loads of blogs whilst on the go and upload them back through Dropbox. Also recently started editing photos from my DSLR using the camera adapter. And watching TV on it is epic!

Not a silly invention. It's a shame others pity their lack of common sense or ill advised opinion on a very good product type that was almost killed by Microsoft. That's another story.

A small, lightweight device, that's even more portable than a laptop, that you can do 1001 different things on? Yeah - utterly useless. I'd agree that taking it out to use as a camera is less than ideal. But if you happened to be say, on the beach, doing one of those 1001 things on your iPad, and some unexpected photo opportunity cropped up? Then why not use it to take a pic?

I don't get this attitude that people have where:

I don't need or want something = That something is useless and anyone who has one is a moron

well other than that example provided, I would imagine it would be useful to have one for the wait time apps that are about. That is if you don't own a smart phone.

Well...from the above you can do everything with the iPad with the exception of the photoshop work.

I suppose no tablet PC will run stuff like that at the moment.

Can't see how it makes the iPad a waste of time though.

Funny that I use my iPad to type up docs, spreadsheets etc all the time

When I was out for Sunday lunch recently a family turned up and were seated at the next table. Within 2 minutes of ordering their grub all 4 kids of varying ages suddenly got out their iPads and that was them gone for the entire meal bar picking at their food with one hand.

It was not just their parents letting them bring the iPads out to keep them entertained but the fact that had felt the need to fork out for 4 of the things.

So you think he should have bought one and they shared it?

I wouldn't buy an iPad but I can see the appeal. I'm not an Apple hater though as I have a Macbook Pro and iPod Touch and I'm quite happy with that setup. I prefer keyboard and mouse and desktop software (like Office).

Yes but you clearly don't know how iCloud works. It stores LOCAL copies of them and syncs them back to the Cloud when you have a network connection.

So to answer your original point, no you don't need to be connected to the Internet to type up notes.

Yes and a tablet pc or low performance laptop will NEVER be the place for these sorts of Apps. They are work tools designed for professionals.

It's the right tools for the right job and an iPad is an easy to use, light weight internet and gaming device.

It's not a professional video editing tool. Never has been and never will be

Erm... Windows 7 on a tablet will run everything that Win7 on a pc will run. The big downside being that the win7 tablets have poor battery life, boot times and win7 is not optimised for finger touch. The same was true of the "tablet" devices than ran XP or Vista all those years before Apple entered the phone or tablet market.

The windows 8 intel tablets will have improved battery life/fast boot, improved finger input and run standard pc programs as well as the Metro apps. IF they live up to the promises they will decimate Apple' share of the tablet market.

Kinda reminds me of the people that used to mock me back in 2004 for having a 3.5 inch touch screen phone and actually wanting to surf the web/check emails, run apps, play games etc.

The funniest thing is that most of those people now own iphones and actually believe that Apple invented the concept.

I guess that just owning a smart phone doesn't make one smart...

It's usually the company that makes things popular that gett eh credit rather than the ones that start it off.

I don't use my iPad a lot for photos or videos, but occasionally when I've got it with me and don't have my normal DSLR camera handy, then yes I will use it and don't care if people think I'm an idiot or not. Its not a feature thats used daily, but I would think a lot of people would miss it if it was taken away.

As for a few comments I've seen about typing on the iPad. My iPad has actually become my main word processor. I've typed out loads of documents on Pages and got myself an Apple Wireless Keyboard for when I'm sat at my desk typing although if its just a quick bit of typing or editing, I'm happy to use the on screen keboard. In fact, my PC, which used to be used on a daily basis, is only used a few times a week now.

You don't have to cut and paste between devices the pages word processing app is compatable with word and coverts easy enough. No need to even email it log into iCloud and there it is which you can access from any computer.

I doubt executive's would have any credibility if they prodded away working on a tablet on the train.

There was minimal business need for one.

Sorry Alan, not sure that i get your point. Surely the problem is that executives think that iPads and iPhones are "cool". Hence the vogue of "bring your own devices" inspite of the increased risks of data security being compromised .

Persoanally I would rather confidental data about me was handled on devices that have a proven track record of allowing IT departments to lock them down and secure them, namely Blackberrys and Windows PCs.

I appreciate that you can apply security policies to iphones but how many owners in a BYOD environment would allow you to remove access to the App Store or browser?

Indeed how many iphone owners are aware that there has already been malware in the App Store, or how many Mac owners believe the BS from Apple that they can't get viruses and they don't need to run AV software?

So executive cool that you need to add iPhones in too.

Plenty of media people and salesmen have them as might your golf playing executive. They are not your everyday office orientated business type though.
