...And yet, for some reason, it's one of those serials that I find myself coming back to again and again. I may pick holes in it all the times I'm watching it, but I genuinely do get a craving to stick the DVD in - especially on a rainy, windswept Autumnal Saturday afternoon.
Must admit I'm the same way. The Dominators is like a horrible tatty old pair of shoes you'd never wear in public but they're just so bloody comfortable.

Didn't quite enjoy it as much watching this again, not one that improves when rewatching if anything I enjoyed it a little less. Still I have to agree with the above post and the one it quotes, yes it has it's quibbles and it is far from perfect but I would dust this one down and happily watch it. It has some endearing qualities to it, the Doctor's performance is decent, especially his frustration with the pacifists and also acting dumb along with Jamie when they are being tested by the Dominators.

The thing I remember most about this story are the costumes; I kept thinking "what the hell are they wearing?" I love looking back on what the 60's thought people of alien planets and the future would wear.

Also, I liked the Quarks. I'd like to see them return one day just to see how they would be redesigned.

Finally back on the Troughton watch after a short break and to a story which I knew absolute zero about bar some comments I read that it wasn't that good. I finished watching it about half an hour ago so just going to highlight my initial reactions

I cant say that its so bad that its without any redeeming features but it was a real 'What the hell ????? ' moment realising that the script came from the same team Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln who wrote the Abominable Snowmen and The Web of Fear, two absolutely top notch stories in Season 5. It feels so different in tone and development to what they have done previously.

Well as others have said in this thread the story took a while to get going and to be honest I only started to get excited in episode 3 as the pace picked up a bit.

Good bits: the Doctor and Jamie, playing at being stupid with Rago and the test on intelligence machine. The Quarks using the molecular ray which pinned the Dulcians to the wall, The Doctor using the sonic as a blowtorch, Cully's relationship with both Zoe and Jamie. when one of the Quarks got really satisfactorily blown up hearing its last words 'Quuuuark ' as it then stopped! The location work had some good action and nice angles considering it was a quarry. Oh I read on Wiki that Pat Troughton wasn't there in the location filming and there was a double. Darned if I really noticed though

Not so great : Whilst I didn't mind the on-going power struggle/ argument ( it was fairly entertaining) between Rago ( Ronald Allen .......oh I had a girl crush on David Hunter when he was in the Crossroads motel ) and his apprentice Toba that the presence of only two of them on the planet looked set to destroy the whole world lacked a little credibility especially when the first shot of the story is showing a fleet of ships in space ... where was everyone else ?? and why didn't they just call for backup?

If this story was meant to be a commentary of unilateralism or pacifism the council as was was really dull. Those scenes lacked a likeable 'Cully ' character there to really make the arguments for action or lack of. Brian Cant was okay but lacked any fire in his dialogue. The council all looked like they were relaxing on sun loungers for all their concern!

I'm off to watch the special features now which will hopefully give me some insight because I'm a little disappointed. maybe I will give it another watch tomorrow

I think it's very noticeable that Troughton wasn't present on location filming and it stands out like a sore thumb!

Morning Daveyboy ☺ it just didn't cross my mind I'm afraid. I think I got distracted looking at the dresses and shoulder pads! 😀😀

Watching the special features bit of a troubled writing process which is a shame. Not sure who had the bigger ego the writers or the script editor Derrick Sherwin.

Yes, I've seen that.

You wonder if The Dominators was made earlier in the Second Doctor's Era it may have been better. Seems like a lot of behind the scenes stuff affected this story quite badly.

And yes, next time you watch it that stand in should be more eye catching!!!!
