Why did ITV agree to not show any semi finals and have no first pick for the quarters?

Can't you just name the channel instead of saying in a mystery way "one side?" It was either BBC or ITV.

And we've only ever made the semi finals in major tournaments in 1966, 1968, 1990, 1996.

Because the BBC and ITV had a coin toss to decide first pick with picks alternating after that, for the matches in the tournament. BBC won the toss and had first pick.

So its suggested that the picks went like this:

1st pick BBC: 1st choice QF
2nd pick ITV: Ukraine v England
3rd pick BBC: England v Sweden
4th choice ITV: France v England

Hence why ITV have had 2 England group matches and the BBC only 1, even though BBC had first choice. BBC have gambled on England reaching the QFs whilst ITV wanted guaranteed advert money from showing 2 England games.

Then to continue:

5th pick BBC: 1st choice semi final

As this then guarantees England would be on the BBC for every match if England got out the group, there is not a lot ITV can do about it now anyway. Both channels share the final of course. ITV and BBC have then gone for the Ireland games.

6th choice ITV: Ireland v Italy
7th choice BBC: Ireland v Spain
8th choice ITV: Ireland v Croatia

Again this guarantees advert money from having 2 Ireland games on ITV from the group stage. As it is of course Ireland were already out and got shown on ITV4 with Spain v Croatia on ITV1 but of course ITV were not to know that would happen when they orignally selected the match.

To continue:

9th choice BBC: 2nd semi final

So you can see how it has worked. ITV have got QFs 2nd choice and 3rd choice and BBC 4th QF choice.

And ITV again have ruined my recording of England v Ukraine. Ten minutes of it was black screen.

Will Lineker look sourfaced if England makes it to the final and all his Crisp deals are off?

He must be fearing that day for decades.

I can confirm Gary Lineker, Alan Hansen and the team will all be flying out to Kiev, Ukraine this weekend. Every England game left in this tournament will be presented live from the stadiums with Gary, Alan and co on BBC1

Coverage of both semi finals and the final was also be live onsite from Poland/Ukraine with Gary Lineker and guests.

Regards

I thought the BBC had said that before the tournament even started?

Evidence in this link, look at the "SOCCER AUDIENCES SINCE 1981" section.

Here is a link to the BBC opening of the semi final broadcast:

I have absolutely no idea if any agreement was broken.
Italia 90 England v West Germany semi was shown live on both BBC & ITV, it's annoying when England are shown live simultaneously on BBC & ITV as we end up losing on Pens.

In the Broadcast section an FM there mentioned BBC have exclusive live coverage of both semi finals, ITV just the highlightss

I'm pretty sure the pre tournament deal for Euro 96 allowed for both channels to show the England semi final if they reached that round. If England hadn't reached the semi then they would have shown one each. There's no way the agreement was just unilaterally broken by one side because they would never have been able to come to such deals ever again. The fact that the deals are still done each tournament suggests that neither side is in the habit of breaking them.

ITV probably decided not to go for the same semi final sharing deal again because they always get trounced in the head to head games. They are better off, ratings and therefore advertising wise, having a 'lesser' game on an exclusive basis than sharing a huge England game with the BBC.

Could be wrong about this but i think up to the 81 wedding between Charles and Di the most watched event was the Chelsea/leeds reply at old trafford in 1970 which was viwed by 27 million , inot thats its a game i want to remember) but i can only assume its because at the time it was first cup final to be replayed , so i guess this record still stands

Nope that record is held by England v West Germany World Cup Final in 1966 which had a audience of 32.30 million This still remains as the most watched program in history in the UK.

The cup final replay you refer to was the 4th most watched program before 1981, and is currently the 5th most watched overall.

Was there something particularly special about the '94 Winter Olympics that I don't remember? Otherwise that's an odd entrant on the list.

Yeh your right, that was Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean in the final free dance on their Olympic comeback in 1994. This was 10 years after their Olympic victory in Sarajevo. They ended up with the bronze medal in 1994.

Torvill and Dean were the flavour of the time and had huge publicity so hope that explains it

I thought Challenger exploding might have been up there, I remember watching that in school. Might have been a recording rather than live, mind you.

Yeh if you had a list for events seen by the most people on the day they happened think Challenger and September 11th would be near the top.

In both cases because they were unexpected it would have been through recordings rather than live

BBC travelling will hopefully liven up their coverage. It is a bit drab and dire at the moment.
