Refusing firmware updates
caveman2

Is there any way that I can connevt my Samsung LCD TV to my network and not be reminded or have automatic firmware updates downloaded.
Once before when I was connected the new firmware downloaded automatically and threw all my settings out. I am again happy with the TV but would like to reconnect the ethernet lead but do NOT want the downloads.
Any one know a way to configure the TV to refuse.

I can't comment on Samsung, but on many TV's there's an option in the setup menu somewhere to accept updates or not.

However, it's probably a VERY bad idea to refuse updates - just write down your settings so you can restore them easily.

I have been happy with the TV for 18 months without firmware updates and do not wish to have to reenter optimum settings after one.
But I would dearly love to reconnect to the internet but I do not have an option to switch off updates.

In a moment of idle curiosity I came across this section of the Samsung website

http://skp.samsungcsportal.com/integ...3248&seq5=3247

Which is a guide to doing a firmware update on Samsung Smart TVs. The nice young lady on the video seems to be saying you have to initiate the update process manually.

Not sure if that is relevant to your TV caveman2 but there do seem to be similar videos on the Samsung support site for each type of TV. Most of the ones I saw being the one I posted.

If you go here

http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/tr...gGuidesMain.do

and feed in your TVs model number it might throw up a similar video about firmware updates (or possibly the same one )

But if that video is correct it looks like you have to prod the TV to go find the update in the first place and then tell it to download it if one is available and finally tell it to actually perform the update. It looks like you are in total control, from that video at least. If so then there should be no issues connecting up the TV and router.

You do not say which model your TV is. Are we supposed to be psychic? I have a UE40D6530. On my TV it does not update the firmware when I connect to the Smart hub wirelessly. As chrisjr says, you have to do it manually. The only auto update option is if the TV is in standby, and you can switch that off as follows. if you press the green Menu button on the TV remote, and then go to the Support menu, one of the options in the right hand pane is Software Upgrade. If you go into that, the option at the bottom is Standby Mode Upgrade. Choose Off.

I don't agree with Nigel (sorry Nigel!) about allowing auto updates. I was happy with an old firmware version, but whilst helping a member of the forum with a firmware update, I inadvertently updated to the most recent version at that time (001018). It changed all my picture settings that I'd spent so long perfecting, and really pi**ed me off!

Sorry, the model is LE40C650L. The green button on my remote does nothing as does any other of the coloured buttons.

One thing I think they should add to TVs is the ability to save your settings to a profile file that can be saved to usb and loaded whenever you need to set them up again.

It was the MENU button being referred to not the four coloured buttons.

I have downloaded the manual for that TV from here.

http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...00Eng_0408.pdf

Pages 20 and 21 talk about software updates. As far as I can see the only possible automated update option is via an over the air process, ie via the aerial. Updating over the internet or via USB appear to be entirely manual processes.

So it would seem that if you want to stop automated updates it should be the aerial lead you unplug not the network lead!

Thanks for all the effort in finding the pdf, however. The information is not strictly true.
If you leave the internet connected all the time, when the firmware changes you are given a prompt to install it. If you don't OK it, then it only prompts you every time you start the TV. If one of the family start the TV and don't realise and beleive it's important then they OK it and then you're knackered.
As I have only done it once, that it how I remember it. As for the USB aerial, I do not have one as I'm on cable.

Or even better not lose the settings when upgrading the firmware, this is perfectly possible with a bit of thought.

Yes off course, but sometimes you lose settings for other reasons and it would be nice to restore them with a file.

Yes it would always be a good safeguard against mucking something up.
