Glad the article turned out to be false as she went on to star in Eastenders for seven more years after this.

I think it would have been a disaster to axe Pat so soon after the departures of several other long serving characters over 2003 and 2004 (Mark and Lisa Fowler, Robbie Jackson, Roy and Barry Evans ect.)

I wonder if she was actually going to be axed and producers changed their minds, or if the story was just rumour.....

Louise Berriage confirmed she was planning to axe Pat but later changed her mind at the last minute due to the previous axings!

Oh really? I never forgave Louise for axing Mark Fowler and Roy Evans lol. I'm glad she didn't axe Pat in the end though, that would have been a huge mistake.

I read online in an interview that she apparently has regrets now after axing Roy!

I'd heard Louise Berridge wanted to axe her, but somebody higher up (John Yorke, I think) put his foot down and stopped her.

Good she axed lots of long running characters. Now, becasue of her, there is only one original character in EE. There could have been two if Todd was to remain in EE, meaning that there would still be a Fowler

I read the same thing. It was a pointless axing, as was Marks axing.

Completely agree. I'd love to see Mark still in the show. It's such a shame the Fowlers have gone.

I think Paulines death was one of the worst storylines ever, made even worse by her husband Joe falling out a window and dying just a month later.

This actually isn't the first time Pauline was going to be axed. Back in 1989, they were planning to allow Pauline to die of cancer but instead, someone intervened because of her status as an original character so she was run over by Ricky Butcher instead.

It's a good thing she didn't go because she became Eastenders fourth longest running character, behind Pat, Dot and Ian.

But, since Pauline was one of my fave characters, I hate Kathleen Hutchinson!! And the fact that she was the longest running character with Ian at the time meant that she was invaluable to the cast. So, since she couldn't axe Pauline, she made her really horrible so Wendy would quit. Otherwise, Wendy could still be with us as the stress of Pauline's horrible character could have contributed to her ill health.

And as for Minty and Jane, if they were axed, took them a w few years to get rid of them!

Bianca came back- 2 years later.

And Kathy was killed.

So basically, most of KH's plans were awful or just took ages

I think Kathleen Hutchinson and Louise Berridge were terrible producers. I know Berridge did invent some great characters (Alfie, Dennis, Andy ect.) but overall they made huge mistakes for the show.

To be fair, ten of those fourteen were dropped, so they were mostly right. Only Pauline, Jane, Minty and Nana stayed on.

Like others, I agree it was a huge mistake axing Roy and Mark. Pillars of the community shouldn't be underestimated, but often EastEnders undervalues them and over and over it keeps happening, most recently with Charlie Slater. It's like they never learn from past incidents. Either that or EastEnders is more prone to hiring short-sighted ratings-grabbers for show runners.

Yes, I never heard her say she planned to axe pat; rather the opposite... She axed Roy because she was Keeping pat and felt Roy made pat too "safe". She wanted to take pat back to
Her roots.

Then she had all those problems and her plans for pat fell by the wayside.

I don't believe she ever planned to axe pat.

Also, Yorker was not in charge of drama during this period. It was mal young.

Yep, in this interview she flat-out denies the rumours, so I guess those saying that 'she' admitted such-and-such are basing this on the evidence of 'sources': http://www.walfordweb.co.uk/ww/spotl...idge-spotlight

BIB: What a horrid thing to say!! Sorry, but to attribute some blame for the actress's real-life deterioration of health and eventual death to the producers of a TV show is in rather bad taste, as well as quite OTT.

If you are born positive unlikely even now. But in the modern world providing you do not get some major illness which would be hard to fight as your immosuppressed, then with drugs if you contract it as a adult then your likely to have almost the same life expectancy as a healthy adult. We have come far in our research, it will however mean a daily cocktail of drugs for the rest of your life. And there is still no cure and if you get some bad illness then its very dangerous. But it was likely he could have lived into old age.
