I'll admit I'd never heard swallow your tongue as I've only got a suburban dictionary.

As far as we know Lauren is not keeping them awake at night.
So I believe she had a far more sinister meaning .
Caroline said that Lauren was always whinging at night so she obviously meant that instead of doing that Lauren should keep quiet and go to sleep.

To suggest there was any other meaning behind what Caroline said is going completely beyond the Pale.

Anyway if BB thought for a second that Caroline was wishing physical harm on Lauren they would have given her a formal warning at the very least or removed her from the house at the most!!!

I've heard of 'hold your tongue' or 'I wanted the ground to swallow me' but swallowing your tongue to me would mean go and die.

I doubt it. It's the usual fake upset you get on this forum, just like the fake upset over the masterbation comment. Childish, but then many here probably are young children.

I suppose if Caroline said that Lauren had a case of foot-in-mouth disease some people on DS would take that as meaning that she hoped that Lauren would get foot and mouth disease and die!!!!

It's an urban expression. I live in rural England and we tend to use expressions such as 'please be quiet', so it's new to me as well. It looks like we have all learnt something new.

That's why they invent new lingo, so the rest of us don't understand what they're talking about.

I didn't know conversate was a word until Romeo used it in CBB.

Whinging at night to who, where? Don't believe that evil woman for a sec.
Caroline is a nasty piece of work and it seems its going to take a lot more of her nastiness before some are convinced .

Or if she asked 'How are you today Lauren?' some DS members would interpret that as 'I hope you are unwell and die today Lauren.'

'Swallow your tongue' was a phrase often used by our teachers in school. Basically meant pipe down.
I'm also from a rural background, but heard this phrase growing up.

For goodness sake 'swallow her tongue' on its own is not offensive but she said 'swallow her tongue and went to sleep'

This is the offensive part . What does it take for some to understand?

Thank you, can I ask if, as a school child, you ever felt your teachers were wishing you dead when they used that expression?

It is a vile statement in the US

the phrase is used in the US and it does imply swallow your tongue and die......perhaps the next time she feels the need to make a uncalled for death wish on someone in house, she could instead rip that rancid looking "Road Kill" off her head and poke it in her piehole...

I see, so 'go to sleep' now means 'die'. Is that when any of us say it or just Caroline.

I agree. I highly doubt she was wishing her to die. I don't even like Caroline but people are overreacting at this.

Caroline is horribly rude and generally mean. The way she treats people is hideous. Being young is no excuse, neither is trying to be funny. She's acting terribly.

Hello, and welcome to DS.

The Urban Dictionary does differ on this and here in the UK, well in rural England at least, it is an expression used to tell children to be quiet.

Not that i'm aware of...I mean, I was a naughty child.

Joking aside, my parents said it to me too...I doubt they'd want me dead.
Caroline saying 'swallow her tongue, and go to sleep' Could also be said as 'I wish she would just stfu and go to sleep'...
Although slightly more offensive imo, do you anyone would have complained if this was the case? I think not.

Hence the sayings 'has the cat got your tongue?' or 'have you swallowed your tongue?'..when asking a person why they are quiet/not speaking.

rant over..

btw* Not a Caroline fan in the least...

Having voiced my doubts about her from the very beginning, I said I'd reserve judgement on Caroline until this week's nominations.

She made it easy for me, sadly.

As to what she said and what she meant by it; what struck me was that she apologised before she said it - much in the manner of someone who knew that what they were going to say was fairly harsh.

Now, Caroline is not, as her supporters have pointed out, one to mince her words. To preface those words with an apology would indicate that the statement was quite strong indeed.

No go to sleep means just that go to sleep, Bite your tongue means just that Bite your tongue,
You cannot Manually swollew your own tongue btw, Unless you are having a seizure. You could choke and die.!

But does it only mean "die" when used in conjunction with "swallow your tongue"???
