Why not just add your gmail account to the ipad mail app?
Or download the GMail app made by Google?

^This

Gmail support is built in to the mailer. Works fine.
I haven't tried the Gmail app but I'm pretty sure it does the same thing.

This.

Using Google Sync on the iPad/iPhone is easy, and means you get push email, calendar, and contact syncing.

Indeed this is what I use for my email client. I have a sky broadband email account which is basically a gmail account underneath.

Yeah I use google apps to host my email and stuff from my domain, it's a fantastic free service.
