Did Billie make a subtle Who reference in True Love?

Semi improvised TV Drama, Billie Piper's character said to the other girl "I was travelling for a while but I came back here to be with my mum"

Subtle Doctor Who reference or am I reading WAAAAAY too much into this? =D

You're reading way too much into it but you never know, maybe she was.

Her episode of True Love was the best one so far to be honest.

It might be a nod to the fans of her work in Who that still watch her - but it could also be unconscious, in that to improvise you have to pull on things you have experience of, and she had been in a show for over two years where she was travelling...

Really? I found her's a complete let down. The first 2 were better.

I think hers was the best too. Tennant's was a bit of a snorefest to be honest.

The other thing I was going to mention about the first two episodes was Lacey Turner. For those who still think she plays every role like Stacey Slater, they should watch the second one in particular. Was a much calmer character she played with just the one argument, which given the situation concerned was understandable. Even then she didn't reach the higher volumes that she did as Stacey.

Billie was great. She deserves lots more acting roles. I suppose her two young children are big priorities so I don't see her ruthlessly pursuing a career.

I thought she was very different in Being Human (sadistic) and again in Bedlam too, where she is very toned down. In Frankenstein's wedding she was also less - chavvy - than in Eastenders. I don't think the comparison other people make is really fair. She appeared in over 1000 episodes of Eastenders or something, which pretty much means that her character had about a dozen transformations, and put through basically every concievable plotline. It's not surprising that people see an overlap where she's playing a character of a similar age - it would be strange if they didn't given the amount she did in Eastenders. She pretty much led the whole cast between 2007 and christmas 2010.

It took Suranne Jones (our very own Idris) about four years to shake off 'Karen McDonald'. She was an actress who was nominated for a "Breakthrough Award" in 2010 for Unforgiven, 13 years after she began her acting career. I think with soap actresses the problem isn't their versatility - a good soap actress needs that in spades - but the public's predisposition to associate them perenially with their characters.

Bit of a tangent, sorry!

The first two were awful bar the performances. Billie's one was a marked improvement. I even think she's a better actor than Tennant and I think he's wonderful.

Don't be sorry, I agree with you!

It just annoys me when people say she can't play a companion because she'd play it like Stacey. This role in True Love does indeed show that she probably wouldn't. Maybe like you say she would need a few years to shake of the Stacey image and prove herself with more roles like this but if she ever would like to do it in the future there's no need to assume she would play a companion the same way as she did in Eastenders.

Also agree about Billie. This is the first role I've actually seen her in Post-Who for sometime, we need to see her more on TV.

Yes, but aren't they given character bios? I'm sure they said that they were given all the facts and a bit of history on the characters which was written for them and what was required for a scene, they just had to improvise the dialogue.

Billie really should do more TV. I know there was a rumour a while back that she was doing a Him & Her style comedy for BBC3 but nothing on that has materialised since though.
