Strange links in "links from external sites" web stats
I've noticed that a small amount of one of my website's traffic comes from websites that I assume are dodgy sales sites (fake shoes, drugs etc). I don't wish to click on the links to check, but I find it rather unlikely that there really are any links to my website, because there is absolutely no connection to the subject matter of the site, and no possible reciprocal benefit.
So does anyone know what this is about? How can the owners of the presumed-dodgy websites benefit from this, given that I (as the webmaster) am the only person even aware of these links? And if they are generating fake visits to my website, they are presumably doing it to many others too. My website is running wordpress, in case that's significant - and I do notice a fair few 404 errors, despite the fact that there are no broken links within the site. So I suspect there might be some vulnerability probing going on, although I'm not sure where this is coming from, because the morons who designed cpanel cleverly empty out the error log entries after 1 hour, whether you've read them or not. Perhaps there's a connection... |
