I think Adele is by far the more stabler performer of the two, but I think that Amy at the start of her career (and even some of her later drunken/drugged up performances) had a more powerful and unique voice. I love Adele, but I do think, and always have thought, that her voice is a less impressive version of Amy's. (That's not to downplay Adele btw, as I think she is great.) Anyone think the same or am I on my lonesome with this one?

As much as i love Adele it has to be Amy Back To Black is one of the greatest albums ever and Amy along with Joss kick started the neo-soul trend in Britain and is the overall better musician without question.

I don't think Adele and Amy have similar voices. I love them both but for different reasons. I love Adele for the pure emotion she puts into her songs and her performances, and the way she makes singing look and sound so easy. I love Amy because her music is just amazing. Her albums seem almost biographical and you can sometimes hear her troubles in her lyrics. She had a more distinctive voice than Adele... but they both have done wonderful things with music.

Amy. I seem to be in the minority of people who really doesn't get the fuss about Adele. She's just a bit 'meh' imo

Totally agree, I was only playing this album yesterday and it's amazing.

Adele, great voice but her material depresses me - although I absolutely love her version of Make You Feel My Love.

This. Although I do like listening to some Adele I'd choose Amy over her any day, and not because she's no longer with us. The stuff she sings about hit a chord and the voice is just a bonus.

This is really difficult, I think people are overlooking Adele due to her incessant exposure over the past year and a half. When she first arrived with "19" people appreciated her for the tremendous talent that she was rather than becoming blindsided by sales figures.
Also a lot of time has now elapsed after Amy's death and usually in these instances fans and music buyers recall and appreciate an artists talent more so than what they did when said artist was alive. Personally, I love "Frank" and "Back To Black" is great too, as for Adele - "19" is great, and "21" is decent. Overall though, I think Adele's voice is easier to listen to than Amy's - plus Amy started to sound a little whiny when she sang live. However, Amy does have a richer voice and more musical credibility i think. She died young so she will always live on as the modern day jazz singer with the troubled life and iconic beehive image to boot whereas Adele is more a Karen Carpenter type figure.

I wasn't so much talking about their songs or lyrics - I meant their voices live. I find they have similar voices but live, Amy was better. IMO she's been much, much better than Adele, but consistently, Adele has turned in better live performances because Amy gave so many truly awful ones.

If your talking about live performances anything post 2006/07 was an unmitigated disaster for Amy apart from Glasto in 07 she was a trainwreck on stage drunk slurring and a whole string of canceled gigs so can you truly gauge it but as you said Adele has been more consistent but in saying that when Sober Amy did a great performance vocally etc but Adele is better with the crowds and people so they both have plus and negatives overall though Amy she was just overall more interesting.

Totally agree with Blondie X - never understood what the fuss over Adele is about. As a vocalist she's good in her own right, has her niche and personality to make people connect to her music. But I never thought she was outstanding and while 21 is musically a good album it is very safe and dull in places...To me, it has always been Amy. when she first came out with Frank, I just thought she was the real Deal and hoped she would get bigger and better. Her music had maturity and soul and when you listen some of her songs from Frank you know there was more to her than her laying her troubled love life bare in her music. I'm just not sure I have more to give than 21 in musical style and contents. and in a way i can't help thinking she's filling a void Amy has left when she was forced to take a break...

To be honest the other posts were more interesting and on point. A comparison of their voices is about the least interesting aspect of Adele and Amy's work. Amy was superior in terms of songwriting and influence and I would say that Amy's singing was definitely distinctive. Adele has shifted a lot of units and has benefited from Amy's work. As a performer Amy would have had the edge in her earlier career but I agree with others that there was a deterioration in her later work.

If yu were to play Amy's voice then Adele's voice next to each other Amy's superiority would be VASTLY obvious!

I remember hearing Adele recently & thinking "Whats the hype? her voice isnt outstanding??"

I do like Adele but I fail to see whats so unique about her.

Amy is a legend

I like Adele and her music, but her subtlety is a disadvantage when compared to the likes of Amy.

Amy. I loved both her albums and her voice was incredible. I liked Adele on 19, but 21 just made me sick and I found it a very boring, lacklustre album...I really don't get the success because it doesn't have the same allure for me that Back To Black did....I'd say Adele and Amy were more evenly matched with 19 and Frank, but even then Amy comes out on top for me.

Back to Black is epic. I loved Amy from a lyrical perspective too, very ballsy and IDGAF too I like Adele, but Amy packs that musical punch that I'd say 21 lacked (in terms of 2nd albums). Me & Mr Jones alone.... 'what kinda ****ery is this??' I LOL'd during revision...and people stared

To be honest, whether you like one voice or another has NOTHING to do with who has the "best" voice. I much prefer listening to Shane McGowans voice to Russel Watson, but obviously Russel has the "better" voice.
Amy did have a distinctive voice and style, but if i HAVE to make a choice it would easily be Adele as I prefer here music.

I don't get the fuss about Adele either. To me, her material is boring and samey, and I don't think her voice is all that great really. I'll pick Amy, because her singles have more variety.

Adele, but both are great.

They don't sound much alike to me but they have other things in common...neither seems/seemed to care too much about their career trajectory or what anyone thinks about them.
