Roku
Has anyone got any info on the roku streaming player? The models available appear to be good value for money for what you can do with one. This machine allows you to watch services like netflix and play games via the internet. Any feedback would be appreciated.

There's no need for "txt speak".

Still playing, adding and removing content at the moment. I would prefer 10 channels i regularly watch than 100's that i dont so checking them all out. Netflix is good, and if you like movies you also get Crackle, Popcorn and another AMC (i think its called that, not by tv at present) There are also older movie and tv channels showing very old public domain films. I have also added USTV Now. I just registered free on their website and now get the free channels NBC, ABC, CBS and a few others. Quality is quite good and watched quite a lot laat night. More updates soon

Had a few days to play and the £50 I paid for the Roku LT was definatley worth it. I also wanted to watch some American TV and there is plenty to watch. These channels are Internet streams, so quality varies across the channels. The main US channels can be found on USTV Now. you do have to go to their website and setup a free account. You get the basic free channels which are ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CW, PBS and My9. There is an epg style guide, but only covers aprox 3 hours ahead. There are more channels eg. bravo, TNT, Discovery, Sci-Fi etc that you can subscribe to but havent tried it and not sure if you could from the UK. Picture quality is ok. I would say VHS type quality. (on a 42" plasma) and only 4:3.
There are other "Roku Channels" you can add to get US broadcasts. "MummyBox" is a Roku channel which broadcasts webstreams and tv from all around . You get a lot of local, community and information channels from the US eg. Princetown Uni Channel, Atlanta TV, Miami TV, Wisconsin Channel, Plum TV Aspen, Michigan Channel, American Prime Time TV and countless more. Quality can range from poor to good and can be quite interesting to watch. There are also other interesting channels here like Fox Movies, MBC2 and the other MBC film channels, Some BBC channels, Virgin Radio TV (France), A few HD music channels, France 24, NASA TV. I could go on and on. These are all LIVE TV streams that are available freely via the Internet. If your expecting Sky, BBC quality you will be dissapointed, but most are perfectly watchable. There is also PEG.TV Community Television. There are quite a few channels here, some offer LIVE TV and others offer a on demand type selection of programs to choose. All are free. These are all community channels, public access, government and education channels. eg. WBMA Bloomfield, TV20 Cleveland, Wright State Uni, Brookdale, etc. again, quality can vary quite a lot. You also have LIVESTATION. this is a collection of news channels and feeds from all around the world. They are mainly internet streams all together in one convenient place for you to select (just like the above). There is CNBC, BBC News, BBC Parliament, NASA TV, Press TV, RT, VOA Persian and more. Just like above, channel quality is Internet stream quality. NowhereTV is another channel that is a collection of streams. There are Live streams and On Demand. You get channels fron the BBC, Arizona State University, etc and On Demand from CBS, Country Network, ABC, HBO, NBC, Cnn, Fox News, Cartoon Network and more. Quality is very good and a lot is HD. There are also Local channels offering On Demand selection (all recent news type) and quality of these varies, and some are very good. eg. of channels... KCTV (Kansas), ABC7 (L.A), WXYZ Detroit, Palm Springs, KMFB and lots more. All the above are the main places you will find US TV. It wont replace your current viewing as quality is lower than normal tv,( Nowhere TV does have HD content) but they can be interesting and addictive. have a look at USTV Now website. Mummybox is a channel that collects internet streams into one convenient place and therefore have no control over content and quality. This means channels can appear and dissapear just as quick. On to other channels... Revision3 Internet Television is great if your into tech and gadgets. There are a selection of broadcasts like AppJudgment, The Ben Heck Show, Destructoid, DiggNation, FilmRiot, Geek Beat TV, HD Nation, LifeHacker and loads more. Once you select one of these there are whole series of individual programs within each. Quality is excellent. CNET TV. good qualiy, great selection of programs for gadget fans. CNBC Real Time is a good stand alone channel, along with Euronews and Fox News. Ameba TV is a Kids Channel with free and subscription content. all top quality. Movies. The main choice is Netflix. If you havent seen it, the user interface is excellent. It displays the film artwork/cover along with title broken down into genres, and in HD. Crackle. Not a great selection of films on the UK version yet, but layout is similar to netflix style. There are ads played out before and during movies. FREE ADC Premium On Demand Films. This again is set out in the same netflix style, but films dont seem very premium to me. all FREE Popcorn Flix. another netflix / crackle style layout channel with a few hundred films FREE. Have not tried any yet. Vanguard. (Quality Independent Cinema). FREE film channel, again netflix style interface. Ads are shown on the free version or you can pay for the PLUS version if you want it ad free. Have not tried this yet as it has only just appeared. Moonlight Movies. Classic and Film Noir Retrovision.TV. classic movies and Tv for free. A quick look and i can see Vampire Bat (1933) Lady Says No (1952) Last Man on Earth (1964) Beverly Hillbillies series (1963) There are channels like BBC iPlayer which is proberbly the best version I have used, The excellent Tunein radio, BlinkBox, Justin TV, Crunchyroll, TWiT TV, UFTV, Flixter, Wall Street Journal, MLB TV, TED TV, Games, News, Weather and more. Have a look at streamfree.tv/apps/ and this will give you an idea of what you can get from the Roku channels AND the private channels available. There are hundreds I havent even mentioned. A few more UK catch up tv services would be great, and hopefully coming soon, Youtube would be good. I would also like to see a PPV Movie service and Lovefilm. I decided on the Roku as I wanted lots of content,Films and US TV. The Roku has lots more than the WDTV has. I know the Roku cant stream from my PC easily, but I didnt want that and was only interested in TV content. It was worth the £50 i spent. I am very happy with the 720p quality available and dont think that the extra £50 for the 1080p model would be worth the extra cost. Hope this helps. (hope you dont buy one and hate it after this) This is just my opinion of what I have seen so far on the Roku in a few days. Some may hate the Roku. I was using my Sony S370 Bluray for Smart tv option, but the Roku blows that away. |

I started out well with a Roku 3 late last year.
Even watched a series of Mad Men and some Game of Thrones on it via a Now TV voucher. The apps I and OH wanted to use most are Youtube and BBC iPlayer. Nowadays, Youtube crashes on being launched every day unless I reboot the Roku and BBC iPlayer is cut off top and bottom by black bars. I desperately await a firmware update, there hasn't been one for months. |
