Just like Liz ... she'd been gone a while before we even knew.

would just like to echo everything that has been said above. Another sad time for us

It's beginning to make me feel old now that the classic series actors and actresses are passing away. It's very upsetting

I've just heard the sad news from a friend who MMS'd me the story.

RIP, Caroline. Another bit of my childhood passed on and another companion gone before.

She was the best thing about the Pertwee years and cast a long shadow. Condolences.

Utterly utterly devastated. Liz is one of my all time favourite companions and Caroline John was honest to god one of the nicest women I'd ever met. Brought a tear to my eye. Just devastating.

May she rest in peace

Sad news indeed.

The first Who story I watched (repeated on the BBC in 2000) was DW and The Silurians which had Liz Shaw as the companion. To this day she remains my favourite.

Personally I haven't seen much of Liz Shaw's time in Doctor Who - the Pertwee stuff I have seen was mainly Jo and Sarah Jane, but what I have seen of Liz and that of Caroline was brilliant.

A modern companion for days gone by. And all of that is down to Caroline. Well done is all I can, but mainly thankyou...you will be missed...

So sad to hear of Caroline's passing. She was great as Liz Shaw, she worked well with Pertwee's Doctor. Shame she only did one series.

RIP Caroline.

I had no idea she was as old as that I know it's silly but the way you see Caroline, and Liz Sladen in Doctor Who you imagin them to always be like that and you can't quite believe it when you find out how old they are.

A very talanred actress and attractive woman Carolines death is yet another sad loss to the world of Doctor Who.

RIP Caroline.

Like others, I never saw her in Dr Who in the 70s. The first time I saw her was in The Five Doctors.

Thanks first to BBC Video, and later DVD, I like many others, had the chance eventually to view her performance. I thought she was rather good in the role, especially in Spearhead From Space, where I am convinced that she is convinced that she is dealing with some fruit 'n' nut job, in the shape of the Doctor.

I liked Liz as an aloof, prim professional. Quite different to some of the other companions.

She will be missed.

I think it's a real shame she didn't get a better innings on the show. She was a victim of the changing production on the programme at the time. Peter Bryant and Derrick Sherwin employed her, then left and the new team of Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks didn't want her character.

It's a shame. If anything, Liz Shaw was just too ahead of her time as a Doctor Who companion. Letts and Dicks felt that you couldn't have a really clever, independent companion like that at the time, so they developed the less intelligent and accident-prone Jo Grant instead.

I know Katy Manning was a popular companion, but I'd have to say the move from Liz Shaw to Jo Grant was a bit of a step backwards for the representation of women in the programme at the time. Liz Shaw had a lot of potential that was just wasted.

Very, very sad to hear this news. Caroline was a talented actress and according to Courtney's auto-bio,
also a lovely person.

RIP Caroline.
