I can't really find any information on this and I'd really like to know...

I can probably name most of the top ten though: Madonna, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Barbara Streissand...

there is a list of all the biggest selling. You can probably work out the females just from looking at that

I think those figures are both singles and albums actually.

records refers to singles + albums combined

No Gaga has sold 64 million Singles worldwide, and 23 albums. Therefore these figures are Single sales, not albums

Yet on Wiki, where I assume you got the info from it even says it's singles and albums combined. You even say in your post records (which means albums and singles) not singles.

Do you really think Dolly Parton has sold 100m singles? Or Barbra Streisand a 140 million?

Surely she must have sold more than 23 albums?

What that list really does show, which we all knew anyway, is if you really crack the States you don't actually need anywhere else.

How many average Brits would know who Reba McEntire was if she punched them in the face tommorrow? Not many I bet, but there she is on that list with 55m records sold while many a worldwide name are nowhere to be seen.

I don't know how reliable this list is but one artist which i know is not right on there is Britney. She has sold 100 million in albums alone i do believe. Her records figure is near enough if not over now 200 million.

No, Britney has sold around 64 million albums in the USA, as far as I remember. Far from 100, but still a lot.

Britney has not sold 64 million albums in the USA, she's sold around 33 million.

Kylie's sales are over 70 million now worldwide.

Sony actually confirmed that Britney was only just short of selling 200 million records of albums and singles combined. I can't remember where as it was in some promo event for her Criminal single release in Poland last year and I can't find the link.

Sales are albums, singles compilations etc. there is also certified sales which can be confirmed sales to be accurate. The other figure is sales which the claimed by the record company which primarily may be true but due to some countries not having accurate recording of sales or other world markets which don't certify sales on the open market. Also we're comments re Gaga and Britney sales often what is shipped is misleadingly reported as sales so all artists have overinflated figures. i.e. Madonna is recorded as having 300 million other information suggests that figure is 350-375 million. But this is based on shipping. Also Beatles Elvis etc. a lot of the information is approximation as they didn't accurately record at the time and figures were rounded up by the record industry.
That is my understanding of how it works.
