I wouldn't say so - to me, it's to Skyrim what Morrowind was to Oblivion when it first came out.

The main criticisms I would make of Oblivion now that I have played Skyrim are:
1) It encourages you to follow the main quest too firmly. I didn't go exploring until I was uber-hard
2) The monsters were a bit too otherworldly. Great if you were into the mythos, a tad bland if you were not.

gfx mainly on consoles. it is old tech and a launch game to boot. on PC with the mods and texture packs it looks a lot better.

Still a great game. Not as good as Skyrim obviously as Skyrim improved on some of Oblivions faults such as parallel leveling of monsters as you get more powerful. At the end, all the bandits and bad guys are wandering around with glass and daedric equipment which is supposed to be rare and expensive.

I think it has aged more in game play mechanics than anything else. It is still a solid game though.

Yeah - I'll never forget that bandit jumping out on me demanding 100 coins, yet he was bedecked from head to foot in the finest green armour with an enchanted daedric sword.

- A great game if you love adventuring in lush scenes and amazing landscapes.

- A poor game when it comes NPC interaction and presentation of NPC animations etc.

So..if we're talking graphics pretty dated then! Morrowind is a whole generation behind Oblivion. Likewise, Skyrim is such a huge graphical leap over Oblivion when you compare them side by side it's untrue. Gameplay wise, not so dated. They all share the same base gameplay to a degree which has been refined over time, particularly the combat.

If the next Elder Scrolls game featured combat like Dark Souls it would be incredible, sadly I doubt that will ever happen.

Skyrim get's pretty ugly wherever snow makes an appearance, look's like it's been made with ms paint in some places, huge miss giving considering 40% of the province is snow covered.

I still can't properly enjoy Skyrim - every time I try, I get my Breezehome house and do a couple of quests, then come home to find that a rabbit leg has jumped off the plate and is on the floor in front of the alchemy lab!

Every time this happens I get the gut feeling that none of the larger problems have really been fixed and the game goes back in it's box for another 3 or 4 months while I wait for yet another patch.

It will have aged really bad by the time I can play this

I think Oblivion is the better game, the atmosphere in it is just so much better, the story is also more interesting, not to mention the arena

The Dark Brotherhood questline was much better in Oblivion. Most, if not all, the guild quests were better.

Still love it though and still play it with affection.

My only issue with the game it's it's targetting and spell systems, but I'm used to MMO's like WoW. To go from clicking on an enemy (or tab selecting it) and using the number keys to fire spells, to having to manually aim then use what is a clunky abilities mechanic is a bit weird.
