Apple to ditch 30 pin dock connector in new Iphone

Apple is to ditch its traditional 30-pin dock connector on the iPhone 5 for a smaller 19-pin equivalent, saving space and introducing a major headache for iPhone accessory manufacturers everywhere.

If this is true then no doubt the tools at Apple will release a adapter for a ridiculously high fee.

They should go with the micro USB standard like everyone else while they are at it.

The problem with micro USB is it's too small and flimsy. I work in a phone shop, and people are forever breaking the charging port, with the result the manufacturers deny servicing, claiming mistreatment and invalidating warraty. I have an ipad, plus a speaker/dock. I shudder to think of the strain if it were micro usb, the slightest movement would break it!

Agreed but Apple like to control what their customers can & can't do on their products, so they have to do something that isn't universal & will probably patient it so no other company would want to copy their lame design.

So you'd be happy docking an iPad on a micro USB port? I wouldn't even like to dock an iPhone on one to be honest.

Dock to proprietary Bluetooth adapter?
£2.50 to make and sell for £25 +

One can't imagine Apple ever allowing standard USB host type playback to gadgets.

This is nothing new with Apple, i worked at a printing company a long time ago using Apple Mac computers when we upgraded to a new G4 none of the old scanners / printers would work as they just dropped all the old ports and went over to USB's

There should be no problem docking a micro USB device as it would not just use the connector that you have to line up. It would have a couple of pins either side on the dock that go into the device (phone/iPod). Laptops have been doing it that way for years and have never had a socket fail on one (I'm a computer engineer).

On the breaking of the micro USB connections I call it miss treatment as you would have to tug them around to actually break one as simply connecting/disconnecting them with a slight pull they are not going to break.

Maybe they are not as strong as the old connections, but you need them smaller for the devices to get stronger and they were always bigger than you ever needed.

I have had 2 micro USB mobiles (at the same time as one was my own and one personal) over 1.5 years and 2.5 years and have never had a problem with them and that's disconnecting them and reconnecting them up 10 times a day as I plug them in the car charger between jobs/collecting parts, then also at home along with connecting to my laptop to sync the data/tether to the internet.
