Does the iPad 3 Have Wifi problems?
Resonance
23-06-2012
Was looking at getting an iPad 3rd gen. However after researching on the net I see quite a lot of people are complaining about poor wifi signal when compared to other devices......not connecting, weak signal meaning poor speed etc.

Is this a widespread problem or does it just effect a minority of people? I don't want to spend 400 quid only to find the wifi is no good.

Thanks in advance.

I can't compare it to other devices but I've had no problem with my wifi signal, but I can't speak for the UK.

No problems with mine in the UK. It seems to have about the same range as any other WiFi device I have in the house.

The wifi reception on my iPad 3 is not as good as that on my Motorola Xoom or my HTC Desire HD, both of which work fine in any part of my home. The iPad struggles tithe point of losing the signal upstairs in 1 room that both the other 2 work in.

Thanks guys. You've reassured me a bit. I live in a fairly small terraced house so am never that far from my router.

Seems to be OK for me too. I'm also in a terraced house with the router in a really bad sub-optimal position, and have no problems using the iPad anywhere in the gaff.

None I have noticed on mine. Works fine in the house and well out of the house with Openzone and the like.

No problem with mine at all; the wifi works very well.

I get better WiFi performance on the iPad 3 as I do on the iPad 1. Very noticeable.

I had massive issues with my iPad (3rd gen) WiFi. It would just randomly lose connection to the router and I had to constantly reset the settings to get it working. The router was set to channel 13 as it was the only clear channel, and all other devices in the house worked perfectly.

Three days ago I changed the router channel to a (slightly) congested channel 1, and it has been perfect ever since.

There is a theory that In the USA WiFI only uses channels 1 - 12, so devices that originate in the USA (iPad, Kindle) aren't set up properly to work on our channel 13, or the Japanese channel 14.

I've had a few issues with my iPad losing WiFi connection and putting it into Airoplane mode and back again resolved the issue for a short period of time, but rebooting my router fixed it for several weeks. That's why I think the problem was down to our ageing (6 years old) Netgear DG834G router especially as it struggles to even move some of the smallest of files from my laptop to desktop and jitters like crazy when using AirPlay on the Apple TV. The latest nail in its coffin came on Sunday when the WiFi suddenly went down and even the WiFi indicator light on the router went off. I'm now looking at getting a new Dual Band N router to replace it.

I have to reboot the iPad at worst a couple of times a week because even though the signal icon is there, I can't connect to the Internet. Disconnecting and re-connecting through settings doesn't help. A reboot takes about thirty seconds. It's not much of an issue.

I would take it into the apple store and get a new one, that's certainly not normal behaviour.

My dad got an iPad 3 (new one) last week and he hasn't had any Wifi problems with it. The wifi works just as well as it does on all our other computers.

I could access my cousin's WiFi from two doors down in my Nan's house on my iPad, and with a good connection as well that allowed me to stream Spotify whilst on the Internet.

I had a bad scratch on the back of my ipad3, took it into the apple store and said that the wifi kept dropping and they swapped it for a new one straight away

Happy days

Was it the Genius Bar you went to? Thankfully I've never had to go there with a Mac or iDevice but it sounds like they're very helpful.
