The Space Pirates
Patrick Troughton I believe had cited this story as his least favourite and if true, perhaps it can be understandable. In comparison to the previous story this really crawls along at an agonising pace.
Not only that, it doesn't get of to a good start that The Doctor doesn't turn up well over until half way through the first episode and then spends most of the second trapped on one set. Plus, he never even gets to meet in person the main villain of the story and generally just seems to play second fiddle to the main action until the last episode! From what I've seen of the 2nd episode it all looks very nice and the incidental music gives it a lift but that's about it. Caven is an excellent villain and I love Milo Clancey, who gives an admirable amount of rebellious stick to General Hermack. Aside from that though, I find there is very little else to commend this story.

Catch the loose cannon recon. It is not a favourite of mine but the recon does make it much better than it at first appears from the audio and the book.

I'm usually very tolerable of Dr Who stories and there's not many I loathe, but this is certainly one where my opinion seems to get even worse as time goes by.
The single surviving episode is tough to watch in itself, and the book failed to impress me either. Now I avoid this story like the plague. |

On episode 4 at the moment and oh my lord this is a little long winded ! 😮how did Robert Holmes get 6 episodes of this idea?
If it had been three it could have zipped along if you cut out all the boring stuff like the commander General Hermack constantly droning on about getting the space pirates or being very interested in exploring what's under Madeleine Issigri s head gear.😨 I know that it's a kind of Western in space and all about the unexplored areas of space and I can kind of see what RH was trying to do but these characters are like the worst kind of Saturday B Movie.Big mistake having American accents in this. Donald Gee as Major Ian Warne reminds me of Buck Rogers & not in a good way! I m debating whether to start cleaning whilst I listen to the last two episodes.please someone tell Me it gets better by the end ? 😯😢 |

You shouldn't ask your friends to lie to you like that.
![]() I did finally get to the end of this story but couldn't post because of the forum update. It did pick up a bit towards the end but it's an odd tale more suited to Blake's 7. it doesn't really bother me that the doctor & companions don't arrive until late into the first episode but they don't seem to have a defined place in the story. Robert Holmes doesn't separate them too much so they could build relationships with the other characters. the Doctor seems a bit melancholy in this story. On the good side the model work is very good. I did like episode one and the last one. |

Out of all the audio stories this is the only one I struggled with. Fate was kind that episodes went missing from this serial rather than the war games.
