Deadwood

Seriously, I'm still baffled that this show got cancelled/the actors got fired. How the hell did this get taken off TV while Two and a Half Men stays on? WTF?

It was very expensive to make and nobody was watching it. Two and a Half Men was cheap and easy to produce and was watched by millions upon millions of mindless drones.

The most incredible thing about Deadwood was the sheer length of the actors' speeches and the complexity of the dialogue (not to mention the colourful profanity). It was like ****ing Shakespeare.

Two and a Half Men: very funny and worth a look just for Jon Cryer's amazing performance.

Sorry, Ironjade! I can't watch Two and a Half Men: I just don't find it funny. At all. Even when I'm drunk, it's still crap. On the other hand, I have seasons 1-3 of Deadwood on DVD now, so I guess I'll just watch that instead. It still baffles me that shows like Deadwood and Arrested Development don't seem to take off in the States in the same way they do in Europe.

If you like Deadwood try Justified and Boardwalk Empire.

These shows got poor figures over here too. Not just the US that likes trashy TV.

I've just completed watching seasons 1-3 on DVD (for the 3rd time in as many years).

A repeat of Deadwood is still far superior to much of what's on at the moment.

You won't be disappointed. There's not an episode that fails to deliver, IMO.

I know: I caught it the first time around, and I'm on to Season 3 already. I've also managed to get another 4 people hooked on it, just by showing them Bullock's first scene in and outside the jail before heading to Deadwood. Those 10/15 mins was all it took for 4 people to say; "Holy sh!t, this is brilliant, can I get a lend of this?"

Deadwood needs more love. Or at least, a fourth series to show Hearst getting his comeuppance. Poor Ellsworth.

One thing I didn't notice until watching it second time around was that it was the same actor (Garret Dillahunt) who played Jack McCall who then also played Hearst's geologist Francis Wolcott.

It was one of those situation where it was totally bugging me as to where I'd seen this guy before until the penny dropped.

And like you, I also have now put several mates on to it, who all now love it. Their first reaction was always: " A western? Cowboys and all that? I'm not really into that kind of thing."

And my response was always the same: "Watch it, and then tell me if you still think it's a 'western'. "

It is a Western. That is a genre and Deadwood qualifies. Perhaps the lesson for people who think they hate Westerns is that not all Westerns are like whatever Westerns they've seen and not liked.

Of course it's a western. Which was why I put it in in inverted commas in my post, meaning that I was betting that they'd soon discover that it didn't fit into their clichéd idea of what they expected from from it.

It was almost Shakespearean, had no precedent to help categorise it.

Okay, I didn't understand what you meant to convey with the inverted commas.

My fault. It wasn't really all that clear, and I was just trying to elaborate on what I meant.

Deadwood is fantastic. I got it via my DVD online rental, really enjoyed the first series (Timothy Olyphant- highly underated in my opinion). I then whizzed through the remaining series and kept wondering when the next would come out. I was so disappointed when I googled and discovered it was cancelled long ago At least it didn't end on a terrible cliff hanger.

You can see by the amazing sets that it must have cost a fortune to make, so I suppose I understand the decision, but why no-one was watching it, I cannot understand? Mind you, I never knew about it at the time, so perhaps it wasn't well enough advertised!

I am waiting to get started with Justified next, whenever that gets selected from my list.

It must never.

It must NEVER have a single minute more.

It must never be continued.

It ended perfectly.

There is no comeuppance.
