Grave of the Fireflies and When The Wind Blows, both animated films that are extremely bleak and depressing. Both are about nuclear war.

Since we're on the theme of animated films about nuclear war, 'Barefoot Gen' is another incredibly depressing one.

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold.

For some inexplicable reason way back in the early 70's, I insisted my mum take me to see it as a young chold, and it was on a double bill with Funeral in Berlin.

Of course I was bored silly, and started wandering round the cinema, and found my way to one of the exits.

Unfortunately on the way back down the stairs, an usher grabbed me and assumed I had bunked in, so kicked me out. I tried to convince them my mum was still in there, but they would not listen.

Worse still, after a while one of my sisters came out and said mum had had her purse stolen from her bag...a woman had asked her for a light and must have lifted the purse from her handbag.

We had to beg the bus driver to let us travel home, as we had no money at all.

And to this day, I cannot watch that movie...even when I have tried, it just looks so gloomy, grey, depressing...and obviously brings back bad memories.

It's a fine movie I'm sure, but not for me.

The Mothman Prophecies - great film and I love it, but I always feel down after watching it.

The Divide

Dead Ringers (Cronenberg + Jeremy Irons)

Eden Lake (..if only for the ending)

A Siberian Film

The Grey (Contentious I know ... )

Saving Private Ryan (I know it's a great film, but I can't watch it all in one go again, especially the "knifing" scene...)

Meet the Parents : Little Fockers ....

Seven, Army of Shadows, Shuttle, 1984, Saving Private Ryan...ultimately depressing but ironically a refreshing change to the usual 'happy' endings

Grave Of The Fireflies is actually about the Holocaust, but it's sort of stylised so could be either really.

It really, really isn't. It's a semi autobiographical story by Akiyuki Nosaka. It is based on his experiences before, during, and after the firebombing of Kobe in 1945. It was written to document the truth of those times and also as a memorial tome to his sister.

So, nothing to do with the Jews or the Germans or the Holocaust but one man's story adapted later in life with certain names changed. Nothing stylised aside from the animation of Studio Ghibli. I'm actually mildly entertained that someone fed you that misinformation let alone that you repeated it.

On the Beach, a bunch of people sitting around in Australia after WW3, waiting for a radiation cloud to drift over and kill them all.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

And two of my favourite films of the last 12 months, not sure what that says about me!
