Movies that grind you down:
Red Road (2006). A tale of isolation, poverty and obsession at the recently demolished Red Road flats in Glasgow. Lilya 4-ever (2002). Escape from the poverty of Eastern Europe to a cushy job in Sweden turns into sex-trafficking.The film does not let up until the credits. Address Unknown (2001). Another dysfunctional family tale from Korea. Hard to think of anything positive that occurred throughout. Movies that are not as bleak as their theme suggests: Melancholia (2011). end of the world run alongside a tale of a depressed Kirsten Dunst is more matter of fact than hopeless. The Road (2009) apart from a couple of scenes, just trudges along and, their situation does not seem as dire as in the book. 4months, 3 weeks and 2 days (2007) Engrossing and superbly acted. This offsets the bleakness of the dying days of communism in Roumania and the central characters' predicament. Winter's Bone (2010). Jennifer Lawrence lifts the film's tone with her feisty character out to save the family home. |

"Leaving Las Vegas"
By the end of it, I wanted to drop a nuke on Las Vegas, just to remove the rotting cesspool of misery from the face of this planet. |

Definitely Requiem For A Dream. There's not one single positive message in the whole film. It's completely soul destroying, but such a stunning movie.

If you want a movie that takes a very bleak view of life, try 'Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia'.
Or the one that I truly felt down after, 'Never Let Me Go', depressing at every level. |

Reminded me of another Romanian film, The Death of Mr Lazarescu (2005). A very dark satire about an old geezer with a dodgy stomach who gets shuffled from hospital to hospital in the back of an ambulance. Very bleak, but brilliantly acted and quite moving. Coincidentally, it's on Film4 on Wednesday night at 1am. Well worth recording and watching later.

You want bleak? Why not treat yourself to a Michael Haneke season?
Benny's Video, The Piano Teacher, Funny Games, Hidden, The White Ribbon. Afterwards you'll be whistling merrily down the road, clicking your heels, singing 'what a wonderful world'. Then you'll walk into the traffic. |

Star Trek: Generations
Now I admit that I'm a huge Star Trek: TNG fanatic, but the first film that featured the cast has evoked a perception of ambivalence within me. It is comprised of a justifiable enough storyline along with first rate special effects, yet I felt overwhelmed with detachment and dissatisfaction at the same time, the only explicable reason regarding this was that it's boring and reminiscent of an over budgeted, double length episode of TNG. However this feeling gradually diminished within the second half of the movie. |

"We Need to Talk About Kevin". After 20 minutes of this I was ready to cut my wrists so I gave up on it.
Has Tilda Swinton ever played a normal person? Her catalogue of downtrodden neurotic losers is beginning to look a bit samey. |

I've never heard anyone say that before, but I will be using it in future.

Well I was half right then, it's not about nuclear war!
